Esplanade Zagreb Hotel
Ranked #1 of 59 Hotels in Zagreb
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 22 June 2013

Over the past two years, this was my fourth stay at the Esplanade hotel in Zagreb. Value for money, this five-star luxury hotel is certainly unbeatable in Croatia and probably in the top five in all of Europe. The hotel is wonderfully located close to the main train station of Zagreb and within easy walking distance of the center of town. It is a classic old-school kind of luxury hotel. The service offered by the staff here is first-class, second to no other hotel in all of Croatia. The Esplanade hotel can be considered as one of the main tourist attractions of Zagreb and, in itself, is a reason to visit the city of Zagreb. Many of the staff members have been there for several years and the on-the-job training as well as the hotel traditions with regards to service have been maintained at the highest levels. The rooms are generally large. Some of the deluxe suites, this time I was in room number 207,have balconies. The building itself dates back to the 1920's as it was purpose built as a stop-off for passengers on the famous Orient Express train. Of course, as is often the case with such old buildings, constant renovation is necessary. My one negative comment is that one notices that it is time for a major overhaul of things. Wear and tear is showing, for example, the carpet floorings in the rooms are in need of renewal. The plumbing, heating, air-conditioning and everything else is still in good running order but the owners/managers need to start thinking about a complete overhaul. My final comment is about the hotel restaurants, the breakfast buffet and à la carte breakfast menu is splendid, dinners in the restaurant, or the less formal bistro, are arguably the best to be had in Zagreb. Strukli, a Croatian speciality cheese dish, is a definite MUST. Not only is the food excellent, the service (greetings to maitre d' Zoran!) is spot on.

Room Tip: The deluxe suites cost a little bit extra but are still within reach of a middle class budget. The o...

I spend four nights in the Esplanade Hotel in relation to a meeting. There is very little negative to say about this elegant hotel kept in the old style. I had a single room under the roof on the 6.th floor. It was larger than expected for a single room and looked nice and clean. The bathroom was very elegant and new. Staff was friendly and helpfull. There is a big outside terrace for breakfast in the morning and drinks later on the day. The internet is free and worked well everywhere.

We stated in a deluxe suite for just the one night. The room was on a corner on Level 5 - it had nice views over the park and Also towards the Old City. The room was very quiet considering trams pass by the street outside.
The bathrooms were well appointed and very clean - swaps rye shower and bath which was great.
Breakfast was included in our rate and we were pleased as it was delicious - the omelettes were outstanding ! Have stayed at a number if good hotels over the years and would have to say that the breakfast quality was at the very high end
Overall a great experience at tithe Esplanade and would have no hesitation in recommending - clearly 5 stars

I stayed here 18 months ago and it is just as fabulous as I remember. I came for a work trip and stayed here as well as taking part in a conference at the hotel. The experience was great. The room was lovely and nicely decorated. Spacious bathroom with l'occitaine products. Great! The conference facilities are also very good. The staff are very helpful and booked a taxi for me that was cheaper than the one I got from the airport on the way to the hotel. The concierge was particularly helpful. The breakfasts are the best I've ever had at a hotel. Try the freshly cooked breakfast items from the separate menu. This hotel is great in every way.

A magnificent hotel, very convenient location for the railway station and only a 10 minute walk to Central Square and the Old Town. Service in all areas was excellent and friendly. My bedroom was spacious and very comfortable. A true luxury hotel at an affordable price and I would recomment the Esplanade to everybody.

Stayed there for 7 nights recently, while attending the Croatia v Scotland match. Couldn't fault the place! Located near the railway station and only a 10 minute walk from the central square, it's perfectly located for exploring the city. The staff are all friendly and efficient. Even the few that appear perhaps less than outgoing when you first meet them are fine if you try that lost skill of talking to them! As another reviewer says, 'if it's good enough for the Irish President, it's good enough for me'. When we left, the concierge made sure that the taxi had it's meter running, which meant that when we got to the airport, the fare was under 100 Kuna rather than the 200 everyone seemed to quote.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay at the Esplanade. The hotel is filled with old world charm and all the little touches that make a hotel stay special. We booked a deluxe room and were upgraded even further we think as our room and bathroom were huge! We stayed in room 401. The bathroom was new and we overlooked the city. Noise was not a problem. We were within easy walking distance of the old town and the parks. The staff were exceptional and offered us advice on several questions. The segway tours leave from here too and we'd thoroughly recommend doing this tour! Great experience.
