“A Little Bit of Luxury”
Reviewed 24 October 2013

Upon arriving to Croatia we had some issues with our flight and had to stay overnight in Zagreb. We spent one night at this glamorous hotel and just as they advertise it really is a hotel of distinction, glamor, style & tradition. The breakfast in the morning was really nice and for one night we slept like royals.

Room Tip: I think each room has a similar view to the street but I am not 100% sure.

This is a terrific hotel in a great location. The key, for us, was the amazing front desk. They always staffed this with friendly, knowledgable and English speaking professionals. They were warm, polite and effective in guiding us through the city and the restaurants.

We ran into several people in southern Croatia who were working their way north to south ( we were doing the opposite) who communicated their positive experience here.

The hotel is beautiful. The bar is great. Zinfindel, their high-end restaurant is outstanding and their breakfast cafe light and cheerful.

It's an easy walk from here to the upper, older and more charming part of town, but it is quiet here.

This is a rare hotel that lives up to a "line" from its own marketing..."A hotel of distinction, of glamour, of style, of tradition." This is absolutely accurate, though anything that can be called glamorous is in short supply in Zagreb.

The Explanade is a great old hotel that has been renewed and modernized with no expense spared, using real "Old World" craftsmen. It was one of the original luxury hotels that supported passengers traveling on the Orient Express. If you are in Zagreb whether for work or passing through while on the way to the Croatian coast this is the hotel to stay at if you can afford it. The hotel restaurant is very good and is supported by a very good wine cellar and the bar is pleasant, though uninspired.

All the positives aside, there are still some significant negatives that need to be taken into account. In terms of negatives the staff is a mixed bag, some are very good and highly sophisticated in their efforts to take care of the guests. Others only seem to know how to appear sophisticated, but are otherwise borderline lazy coupled with having attitude. Even though it is a remarkable hotel, it is still clearly overpriced for Zagreb and the efforts by the hotel to squeeze every last bit of money out of its guests is distasteful (associated fees, prices, gratuities, parking, etc.)

October 2013: My husband and I just returned from a trip to Croatia that included three nights at the Explanade Hotel Zagreb. What luxury. The staff was very nice and friendly to us. We had a beautiful room with a king-size bed and sitting area — the room was much larger than we needed. Bathroom included a bathtub and shower. The room looked north to the main portion of the historic section of the city. It is literally kitty-korner from the train station. We would definitely stay here again.

Loved this hotel, loved the concierge(he sent us champagne), loved the location! There is nothing to say about this hotel that would not be glowing. Elegant, historic, comfortable and we wouldn't change one thing about it. We agree wholeheartedly with all reviews.

If you want to feel like Agatha Christie who has just gotten out of the Orient Express for a short rest in Zagreb, then you should stay at the Hotel Esplanade. Central European grandeur of a bygone era, but updated to modern standards. Super nice hotel and high class breakfast. Great lobby, loved the clocks showing world time. Zagreb is particularly interesting in the Old Town, the New Town, we found boring and predictable.

Such a beautiful historic city. This hotel looks magnificent on the inside and out. Convieniently located; close to tram, rail station and beautiful parks and shops. Within waking distance to city center. The food is delicious and service unbeatable. The few downfalls include: few English channels, actually hardly any channels worth watching. TVs are a bit dated as well. Upgrading to a better satellite system would be nice. Beds! Oh the rock hard/ extra firm matress is not a friend. My neck, shoulders, and back ache day and night.
The service and food thankfully make up for it! For this price the TVs and beds should be upgraded though.
