“Elegant, classic hotel - loved it”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

The Esplanade is a traditional grand hotel, very elegant and old-world, but well-maintained and updated. Service was excellent, beginning with the check-in process which is conducted sitting in armchairs at a desk, rather than the usual stand-up counter. We were escorted to our room and the bellman gave us an overview of the facilities. Also, we were able to just leave our rental car at the front door and hand over the keys, and they called to advise the agency it was ready for pickup since we were several hours earlier than scheduled.

I believe we were upgraded to a larger room than we'd booked - it had a sitting area with sofa and coffee table at one end of the large room. Big comfortable bed and huge marble bathroom with a glass-enclosed shower, separate tub, toilet room, double sink, lighted makeup mirror, etc. Lots of closet space, good mirrors & lighting. Altogether a very lovely accommodation, . My only minor criticism is that the pocket door to close off the bathroom has a frosted glass panel - not ideal if one person wants to turn on a light during the night without waking their partner.

The included breakfast buffet had an ample assortment of hot and cold dishes, and is served in the lovely dining room. It was cold and rainy during our stay but it looks like there's patio seating during the summer. One could also order cooked-to-order items off a menu, but the pricing was astronomical. We also had dinner at the hotel restaurant, Zinfandel, and it was outstanding (separately reviewed).

Location of the hotel is good, easy to reach by car, a short walk to the center of town, and virtually next door to the train station which was very convenient as we were departing by train. Our room faced in the direction of the train tracks and while we could occasionally hear the rumble of passing trains, it didn't disturb us. I would highly recommend the Esplanade!

Regent Hotel Esplanade, is elegant. Every area of the hotel, which we encountered, was quite elegant. Well located, in the downtown area, within walking distance of the old city. We had dinner the first night at Zinfandels, the up-scale restaurant in the hotel. An excellent meal. All of the staff are "concierges." Even though the concierge desk was busy, the registration desk staff were quite happy to assist us.

I only stayed one night but had a lovely experience. The hotel is charming, the breakfast room very bright and the food delicious. What struck me most was that hotel staff went out of their way to help even if I was just passing by. I was hoping to get a massage and everything was fully booked at the spa. The reception actually called me an hour later offering an option they had arranged at a nearby place on a Sunday (when clearly everything is normally closed). Due to the timing of the massage I end up leaving the room way past the late check out time and they were super gracious about it, letting me take my time to finish all i had to do. Somehow, i would expect this in a place where i go frequently and people know me. Not in a place where you are staying overnight for the first time. Notes:
- I could not care less, but this is not the place to go if you are set on a large flat screen TV.
- If i recall you get free internet access without having to enter codes and password which is a very pleasant change.

The hotel is on the edge of the old town, an easy walk to the cathedral. It is very much old style with a grand lobby with plenty of marble, but it has all been nicely brought up to date without losing the character. The room I stayed in was large, clean and comfortable rather than luxurious. There was a nice seating area as well as a large bed, but no kettle or tea and coffee. Nice bathroom with separate shower but no bath. Breakfast was good, in a bright airy restaurant. I would happily stay again.

Upon arriving to Croatia we had some issues with our flight and had to stay overnight in Zagreb. We spent one night at this glamorous hotel and just as they advertise it really is a hotel of distinction, glamor, style & tradition. The breakfast in the morning was really nice and for one night we slept like royals.

Room Tip: I think each room has a similar view to the street but I am not 100% sure.

This is a terrific hotel in a great location. The key, for us, was the amazing front desk. They always staffed this with friendly, knowledgable and English speaking professionals. They were warm, polite and effective in guiding us through the city and the restaurants.

We ran into several people in southern Croatia who were working their way north to south ( we were doing the opposite) who communicated their positive experience here.

The hotel is beautiful. The bar is great. Zinfindel, their high-end restaurant is outstanding and their breakfast cafe light and cheerful.

It's an easy walk from here to the upper, older and more charming part of town, but it is quiet here.

This is a rare hotel that lives up to a "line" from its own marketing..."A hotel of distinction, of glamour, of style, of tradition." This is absolutely accurate, though anything that can be called glamorous is in short supply in Zagreb.

The Explanade is a great old hotel that has been renewed and modernized with no expense spared, using real "Old World" craftsmen. It was one of the original luxury hotels that supported passengers traveling on the Orient Express. If you are in Zagreb whether for work or passing through while on the way to the Croatian coast this is the hotel to stay at if you can afford it. The hotel restaurant is very good and is supported by a very good wine cellar and the bar is pleasant, though uninspired.

All the positives aside, there are still some significant negatives that need to be taken into account. In terms of negatives the staff is a mixed bag, some are very good and highly sophisticated in their efforts to take care of the guests. Others only seem to know how to appear sophisticated, but are otherwise borderline lazy coupled with having attitude. Even though it is a remarkable hotel, it is still clearly overpriced for Zagreb and the efforts by the hotel to squeeze every last bit of money out of its guests is distasteful (associated fees, prices, gratuities, parking, etc.)
