Booked by email, confirmed and reconfirmed a couple of days before arrival to be told no room. Another couple arrived at the same time and had the same experience. The receptionist was unhelpful and initially resisted finding us somewhere else to stay. Even when she did, she wouldn't pay for a taxi there (it was Hotel Central opposite the station, where we had just taken a taxi from!) nor the difference in room cost.

Booked due to great review in Lonely Planet....will check Tripadvisor next time! I appreciate things can go wrong sometimes but there was no effort to help find a resolution. Hotel Central is recommended if you want a central, clean hotel.

Cons: Small Room, crazy decorations and the owner is wacky.

Pros: Crazy decorations, the owner is wacky, centrally located (best you'll do in this price range) breakfast was OK and parking is available at an affordable rate. I would stay here the next time I'm in Zagreb. Yes, there are nicer places, but not at this price in this part of town. Everything you want to see is within walking distance.

We paid 60 euros for the new year's eve night and I think we had some kinde of dicount.

The hotel seemed nice at first sight, maybe room was a little small... The WORST part of it was breakfast : awful !!! and i'm not difficult !

I think it's a very expensive hotel for the quality offered.

It is cheap, has nice if kitsch atmosphere, but you won't sleep. The walls are so incredible thin that you hear every word your neighbour is saying. They say they have wireless, well it is only in the salon. That is the single and only space where you can use internet. They say they are friendly, well they were not. We agreed the price in euro (the one which was on internet) on the phone. Next day suddenly the price had changed because the excange rate had changed. They never mentioned on the phone that the price could change subject to exchange rate. They even threatened calling the police. On the website they still had the old price by the way. You can pay only cash.
These were 'inconveniences' but the thin walls were really INSUPPORTABLE. I did not sleep at all whereas I am normally a good sleeper and certainly was exhausted enough for it.
So DON'T GO!

The worst and the most badly-run hotel I have ever seen in my life. Undersized dark rooms with tattered pillow cases, sheets and towels. Everything was old and tattered. The service was awful and apart from making you pay way before your departure they were not interested in anything else . The breakfast was the lousiest we had ever had. They put small amounts of jam , something like barely 10 grams in small saucers. There is a fridge right in the middle of their dark gloomy breakfast room and when I opened the fridge to take out something we had bought before, since their breakfast was absolutely inedible, guess what! I found lots and lots of those little saucers with half eaten jam on them. It seems as if they have found an ingenious way to save money even on jam! Not to mention the disgusting feeling it gave me to see that we were fed with the remnants of other people's breakfast.

Having spent several days at Hotel Ilica, I can see why it generates such polarizing reviews. On the one hand, it is well located in the centre of Zagreb with a tram stop at the door and lots of various shops around. The staff is kind, very friendly and helpful (although the manager is indeed rather whimsical and I can imagine that sometimes he might react ... well, unpredictably to your requests). You can use a computer in the lobby at no charge as long as it is not taken by someone else. And, of course, the interior will definitely put a smile on your face.
On the other hand, the rooms are small, uncomfortable and not very clean. The beds are old and sqeaky, the linen is old and unpleasant and we could not get one good night's sleep during our stay. After such a night, one wants a nice cup of strong coffee to start the day, but coffee (as well as so-called juice) was undrinkable and breakfast not at all tasty. After a couple of days we avoided the hotel breakfast entirely and instead went out to buy some coffee and pastry in the nearby shops (thankfully, there are a lot of them around).
And finally, we thought that the price of 72 euros per night was not at all low as some other reviews suggest (perhaps the prices went up since then?). With all due respect to Zagreb, one can get a better hotel in Paris for 10 euros less.
In short, I would not recommend staying there for more than one night. If you do, however, you will certainly have some funny stories to tell back home.
