“Great hotel at reasonable price”
Reviewed 17 July 2011

We stayed here for a night after travelling for over 32 hours from New Zealand. I had requested a quiet room on an upper level after checking reviews on Trip Advisor as I knew we would be tired. On arrival we were advised we had been upgraded to a suite at no extra cost on the top floor. The suite was spacious and very quiet and well appointed. Breakfast was included and was the best breakfast we had during our stay in Croatia. We walked to the Upper Town (the old part ) in the morning. While there are not many restaurnants near the hotel it is not far to walk to find lots of options. We would definitely recommend this hotel - it doesn't look much from the outside but it is very nice inside and the staff were very helpful.

We reserved a king-sized room and a twin room for our teenage boys - very comfortable, free wifi, good-sized bathroom with nice amenities and a rich breakfast buffet. Parking was in an outside, gated lot around the corner, and the central location made it very convenient for us. The staff at the front desk were very polite - both the morning and evening shift. Highly recommended.

We asked for a recommendation for a good restaurant and they offered a beautiful little Italian place which we really enjoyed. The breakfast was good, and the old part of town is in walking distance from the hotel.

Really nice place. Very friendly staff. Good movies channels in English. But they could work on their breakfast. Well situated. Recommended.

Satayed in Zagreb, Croatia at the Best Western Hotel Astoria. The room was the size of a shoe box, I'm not a very big person but I could only move sideways inside the room, and the bathroom was the same. The reception staff at check-in was terrible, the young guy doing it was obviously in a very bad mood (shouldn't be working in the hospitality industry). I asked for an upgrade since I'm a Best Western frequent stay member, only to be snapped at and denying the request. Alleged that the hotel was full (the pope was in town) although did not look full at all. But that's no excuse. While the location is relatively central, there are no restaurants in the vecinity, only a chinese one and fast food joints, and taking into consideration that the downtown area was shut down because of the pope visit, the restaurant scene was not exixting. The only redimming quality of the hotel was the breakfast, which included champaigne. Overall, I wouldn't be stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Don't stay here

We found this a very comfortable and convenient hotel for a one-night stopover before catching the train down to Split. It's been completely refurbished, so although the rooms can be a bit small, they are very well equipped. (OK, ours looked out on to a blank wall, but a room with a view was not exactly a priority!). Breakfast in the morning was a good spread too. The location is well placed both for the railway station (10 minutes at most) and for sightseeing in the old centre of the city. Reception are friendly and helpful.

We stayed in the Hotel Astoria for three nights in June 2011 as part of a stop in Zagreb to see Bon Jovi at the Maximir stadium and also en route to the Croatian coast and then on to Monetenegro. I was last in Zagreb just shortly after the war in 1995 working with the United Nations where we were lavishly holed up in the Sheraton and rarley ventured out at night for reasons of safety and a general lack of decent eateries.

So it was good to be back under my own steam and this time as a genuine tourist and it was immediately clear that Zagreb has moved on and is flourishing under a more peaceful regime.

The hotel was very easy to find, helped by a combination of my knowledge of the town's layout, a good selection of printed maps and directions, but also the very useful signposts around the town pointing you in the right direction for all of the main hotels. Zagreb city centre is formed around a grid system so if you do miss your turning, it's easy enough to find your way back, even with the one-way system in place.

The hotel is located two streets along from the main gardens that run from the train station and contain the Tomislav monument. It is a short ten minute stroll from the main square, the green market and cathedral.

Our rooms were wonderfully spacious (Executive Rooms) on the fifth floor and contained everything you needed: room safe, mini bar, plenty of towels, Yves Rocher toiletries, laundry service, wide selection of TV channels, free wireless internet, daily maid service and a very comfortable bed. The breakfast was excellent, a vast array of hot and cold buffet choices and the hotel has its own free parking around the back.

The reception staff were very friendly and welcoming, and provided us with excellent assistance when we needed to find a car garage to have a small repair done on our vehicle while we were in town. The only gripe in general about Zagreb is the relatively early closing of restaurants. If you want to eat beyond 11pm then you are faced with a small selection of fast food joints serving microwave reheated sandwiches and pizza slices. The contrast with the coast is very marked indeed where you can eat practically around the clock and the pace of life is generally later and more active at nighttime.

That said, all in all it was a wonderful stay and the hotel comes highly recommended as the perfect place to base yourself whilst making your way around the beautiful streets of Zagreb.
