Athenee Palace Hilton Bucharest
Ranked #10 of 169 Hotels in Bucharest
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 12 September 2009

The Athenee Palace is an old hotel taken over in the mid 90’s by the Hilton and brought back to its former glory. From the airport we took bus #783 and we got off at Romana Square, which is a short walk to the hotel. There are plenty of taxis at the airport but we wanted to experience the local flavor. The ride wasn't that bad and took about 45 min. As soon as we arrived we were warmly welcomed and upgraded to a junior suite on the 3rd floor with access to the executive lounge. The lounge is really great, serving breakfast till 10 am, snack and drinks till 11 pm. There is a balcony up there with a great view of the square below. Also they have 2 PCs with free Internet access. The staff is very nice, professional and accommodating. The room was very clean and the bed comfortable. The only complaint I have about the room is the old TVs, they sure can spend a little and replace them with flat screens. The location is the best possible, within walking distance to most things you want to see in Bucharest. The only restaurant we tried was La Strada which was a disappointment. The food is mediocre, the service is unremarkable and the prices are high. There are lots of better choices nearby. One pleasant surprise was a Lebanese restaurant called Tulin, a 10 minutes walk from the hotel. We really enjoy the food and atmosphere at Tulin. The hotel is a very good choice if you are in Bucharest for business or pleasure.

Spent 4 nights at this hotel with my wife.

Check-in was a little off. Was not directed upstairs to the HH check-in decks. Also check-in was poor because the trainee wasn't able to upgrade me even though in the computer it showed I should have one. Had to wait for her supervisor to come (about 20 minutes) and provide the appropriate code. Was upgraded to a junior suite (Diamond HH member), which was quite spacious with a separate sitting area and television. Bathroom was very nice, combo tub and shower. Nice architectural features in the room and modern decor, two flat screen TVs.

Bed was comfortable but nothing special. Bathrobes and slippers provided, as were two bottles of mineral water each day.

The problem we had with this property is the Executive Lounge was closed during the weekend of our stay (we arrived Sat morning) for apparent floor repair and didn't re-open until Monday. As a result, the hotel required guests with access to have a letter (not willingly provided at check-in) that upon showing this letter would permit the guest to have beverages (juices, sodas and alcoholic drinks) in the English Pub, along with some canapes, and allegedly tea/coffee and pastries in the Brasserie. We took advantage of the juice and a beer one night in the pub (the canapes were a little weak-limited to a plate of 5 tiny open-faced croquettes shared between two people). We checked several times during our stay and it didn't appear any work was being done in the lounge. It is my belief they simply closed the lounge on the weekend due to low bookings during this time and to reduce staffing needs.

When the lounge re-opened on Monday we were pleased with the afternoon snacks of several types of chips/crisps, nuts, fruits, beverages and and Illy coffee maker.

Breakfast was the standard Hilton breakfast and was delicious. We took our plates out onto the terrace and enjoyed it. Getting the wait staff to bring us tea or coffee was difficult as they didn't seem to check outside very often. Pastries were quite good and nice yogurt selection and fresh fruits.

Location is right near the Revolution Square (think Dec. 1989) and the view from the hotel is quite nice.

Business Center on Executive floor has only two computers with printers and you need your room key for access. Very fast connection.

Fitness center is located at the back of the hotel (has city residents as members and hotel guests get free access) and the pool was nice, as were the sauna and steam bath.

Lounge dissatisfaction not withstanding, I would certainly return to this property without hesitation.

I have stayed in several five star hotels during my business trips to Bucharest and this is by far the best one. The standard room which I got was fairly large and the view of the square in front of the hotel was great.

I got buffet breakfast included in the room price and the selection was vast, food very tasty. I also had a business lunch with a local partner of our company in one of the restaurants, the Brasserie, and I totally recommend it - proper business atmosphere and very professional waiters.

My overall experience was excellent, even though the room was a little pricy, but the service and quality make the difference. Would definitely choose Hilton Bucharest again for my next trips.

I just returned from a short business trip to Bucharest and stayed at the Athenee Hilton on the advice of a colleague- I was not disappointed.

My standard room was very large with a comfortable bed and was, thankfully, facing away from the main street and therefore very quiet.

The fitness centre was top-notch and the pool/sauna was refreshing- especially considering how hot the city was.

Not having time to explore the city, I ate at the Italian restaurant attached to the hotel. The staff were exceptionally polite and the food was tasty. Breakfast, served in the same restaurant was plentiful but expensive.

Overall a very good experience.

We thought the location couldn't be beat, and in the 3 days we traversed OTP, I didn't see a hotel where I would have rather stayed. Wireless internet was super expensive though, but that's often the case at EU Hiltons... :( You can buy hourly wireless just to check in at the Radisson across the street, but the Hilton doesn't offer it.

The staff was very helpful, and they have a Clef D'Or concierge on staff which was very helpful to see! Rooms are huge, but be sure the AC works! We had problems with ours several times, and unfortunately you can't open the windows. :(

We started a recent trip around south eastern Europe in Bucharest. While the city itself had been plucked of many of its French-inspired architecture, the Hilton does have a hint of its pre-war past. The hotel itself is very central and within walking distance of pretty much everything (I think we rode the metro once or twice) especially the museums right across the street. While normally I'm not a big fan of large parking lots in the middle of the urban center, the square that the hotel is on is basically that and it does allow for some open views to the buildings all around.

We had been upgraded to an Executive Room with access to the lounge which was very nice (top floor with the lounge offering the better views). It was a little pricey for Eastern Europe, but the room was clean and comfortable and in a very good location for dining (cute neighborhood to the side of the hotel with lots of open air cafes), sightseeing and the like.

We stayed here only for one night and although we probably would not choose to visit Bucharest again we enjoyed the hotel. We had a lovely big room and although the furniture is a bit older all is there what you need and it is well maintained. Nice touch was the Nespresso machine in the room so we could make good coffee and tea. In the evening some little bites were placed in our room; nice touch! We had lounge access and that was nice too..in the evening we had drinks there and some horse d'oeuvres. Shops and restaurants are nearby. Roomservice is very good
enjoyed a nice pasta dish and ceasars salad in the room..
