The old center of Bucharest was once the center of business of Bucharest. Lipscani comes from Lipsca, the old local name for Leipzig, and was a street full of shops and street trade. Major banks and National Bank of Romania built their sumptuous palaces there. Gradually after 1950 the area felt into decrepitude and the owners left the houses, some gypsies taking them over. About ten years ago a big renovation program started and the Centru Vechi (The Old Center) was transformed in a large recreation area, meaning till now mostly restaurants, clubs, beer houses and pubs. However, more and more shops open their doors now.
During the evening my guess is that the average age of visitors is 22-24 and the place is quite crowded.
Just a few houses however are still to be renovated and some of recent inhabitants are seen there.
It is one of the places where west meets east! Deserves a vist!
