“Avoid at all costs”
Reviewed 8 May 2008

We booked this hotel ourselves via email communication. We were promised 3 single rooms at 115 Euros each, including breakfast. Instead we were given 2 rooms at 115 Euros and one at 200 Euros. The hotel has a glorious history that is being destroyed by the outrageous attitude of the staff. As another reviewer stated, the staff is among the worst, if not the absolute worst, of that in any hotel I have stayed in in any country in the world. They are totally unconcerned with the guests, unhelpful, continue - now over six months after that review, to spend their time in the lobby watching television. They are surly, rude, and ill trained. Do not under any circumstances consider staying here. While another reviewer did not have heat, we had no air, and the air conditioning is that in name only. Our room looked out on the interior courtyard so there literally was not fresh air. Casa Capsa is to be avoided.

I spent the weekend in Bucharest with my wife at the Casa Capsa. This should be one of the best hotels in Bucharest and certainly has one of the most comfortable beds. However, the experience is spoilt by dreadful service. The €15 breakfast is feeble and consists of luke warm coffee, stale pastries and few odds and ends. This is supposed to be 5 star but the staff sit around watching TV in the entrance lobby and nobody raises himself to open the door or help with shopping. A request for a taxi produced a firm that charges 3X the Bucharest average. When my wife queried this an altercation broke out and we were told to "respect" the desk staff. That night our room door was deliberately jammed open to invite theft, I suppose to teach us a lesson! The heating was also turned off in our room!
This is a potentialy great hotel but avoid at all costs until competent management is introduced and the service matches the considerable room cost! I have never experienced worse service in any class of hotel.

If yards and yards of dark wood panelling, deep-pile carpets, chandelier-like light fittings and staff outfitted in maroon jackets are to your taste, then the Capsa will certainly give you that old Central European experience. However, light and airy it is not, including the service! Frankly, more than just a few staff appeared bored and demotivated. Only occasionally did you receive a cheery hello or smile, which just went to reinforce all those misplaced stereotypes we have of glum Central Europeans!

With a little bit more imagination and application by management, the Capsa could be one of Bucharest's finest hotels. It has so much going for it including the originality and charm of its physical structure, 120 years of history and superb location. At present it is desperately underperforming and pricing itself out of the market. In truth, the Capsa falls well short of its five star status.

My husband and I traveled through Romania in May of this year. We took a train from Moldova and arrived in Bucharesti. We rented a car and drove around Romania for 2weeks. Upon returning to Bucharesti, we decided to stay for a few days and see the sights.

Bucharesti is an amazing place full of contradictions. The old, historic center is well worth seeing as are several of the museums.

We stayed at the Hotel (Casa) Capsa. We found this hotel by driving around the center after having left the hotel that we had originally booked (Duke Hotel - reviewed separately).

The Capsa is certainly in an ideal location for getting around, finding places to eat and sightseeing in the center. The room we were in had recently be redecorated. It was pretty and quiet. The bathroom was squeaky clean and everything worked. The AC was available and worked well (It was very hot there in May - in the 90's).

The breakfast was served in a very nice area dedicated to this purpose - so often the breakfast space is delegated to a basement area or bar or something but this had been well thought out and was very pleasant. The breakfast was not inspired but certainly adequate. There was plenty of hot coffee or water for tea, selection of breads and jams and butter and juices as well as sausages and scrambled eggs, boiled eggs and yogurt. The usual fair, just done better than most in that part of the world.

We were paying 200+ euros a night.

I guess the only thing I can complain about is the staff. If you have traveled to any of the old Eastern Block countries, you know that service is often a foreign concept so you just take what you get. But you usually aren't paying 200euros a night . The front desk staff was disinterested at best and surly at worst. There were usually bell staff sitting in the lobby watching tv! It was very odd.

My husband was annoyed that the carpet was not vacuumed well when we arrived and it never was for the four days we were there!

So, it was a lovely space in a great location with serious customer service problems but not any worse than other eastern european places I have been. BUT it gets points for having the AC working.( We went places later in June and it was sweltering and the hotels wouldn't turn on the &*^%$ air conditioning! What is that about?) If we returned to Bucharesti, we would try to find something a little less expensive. Bucharesti is charging Paris prices and it has a LONG way to go before it can justify them.

Recommendation brought me to the Hotel Capsa during a week when all my other choices in Bucharest were booked up.

Very pleasantly surprised. This old dame (which has hosted tsars, kaisers and the odd emperor in the past) has had a plush facelift and is very comfortable.

Somewhat Victorianesque decor in rooms, a little dark but comfortable with fair range of toiletries and robe. And renovation means there's individually controlled air con - hooray!

Casa Capsa restaurant decent and in the old style of service. Hotel largely deserted, and someone's obviously not doing a good marketing job on it. Terms reasonable and Internet free (remember to ask for cable at reception).

Central location on Calea Victoriei is great (across from Military Centre), and check out the Passajul Macca a short walk away for range of cafes and bistros in grand covered alleyway.

  • Liked — Impeccably clean, comfortable and centrally located
  • Disliked — Lack of big lounge on ground floor

The hotel is clean, the service is OK, if not heartwarming and the rooms are large and clean, the bed was great and all of the amenities work perfectly. The breakfast is OK, but not to a true 5-* quality.

In my book this was a 5-* hotel with a 3-* management, which fit my needs just fine. Have a look inside before judging the hotel -- the exterior is nowhere near as nice as the interiour.
