“Studenica - on the UNESCO Word Heritage list since 1986.”

You can find many useful facts about this very old monastery, but only a small number of people know that St. Sava founded the first serbian hospital in this monastery in 1207. It is the first monastery in Europe with it's own hospital. During 13th century monasteries from all over Europe had shelters for poor and sick people, but didn't have hospitals.

Nice old monastery and views from it to the surroundings. Also good place for dinner in nearby building of restaurant/hotel. They offered only fish because of religious purposes in that day and that fish was perfect.

Studenica is located near town Kraljevo on the bank of the Studenica river. Within monastery complex there are several objects: church of Virgin Mary, St. Nicholas church, church of St. Anne and Joachim. The most beautiful is white marble church of Virgin Mary. It is the endowment of Stefan Nemanja and his son Rastko. The church is built in 12th century and was a role model for many churches that were erected in later centuries.
The sculpture of Virgin Mary church is the most valuable work in Serbian medieval art. On the west facade is highly decorated main portal. Maybe the most beautiful artwork of the church is the window in the apse. It has four columns with three arches and whole window is framed with ornate band. In the church there is one of the most beautiful medieval fresco painting: Crucifixion, painted on blue background with golden stars.
The architecture of church is western origin and fresco paintings are work of Eastern, Byzantine artists. Studenica is on UNESCO heritage list.

The monastery is located in the middle of the mountains, at least 30km from the nearest city, though not the easiest to get to, it is still worth a visit. Both of the churches in the monastery is properly maintained on the outside, and gradually innovated from the inside. The monastery itself holds some of the most important artifacts of the Serbian history in the 12th century.

However, both the restaurant and shops were closed when we get there. We were informed that it opens on 1st April.

The monastery is still active and services are held in the churches. The grounds are lovely and provide a peaceful atmosphere. There was no charge for entering the grounds or buildings and a person was available to act as a guide (again no charge and good English). There is ongoing restoration being undertaken to preserve the buildings.
