Very nice family restaurant. They have a very very nice garden and if you come here at summer you will probably like to sit outside. It is unbelievable that you are in the middle of the city.
Restaurant has sometimes theme nights, like lamb in milk or soldier beans or something else where main course is on boss's account and everything else (what you drink and eat) is on yours. Also live music is available in such evenings. I'll recommend you this place.

Other than fantastic garden this place does not offer anything else. Food is below average quality for Belgrade, service is slow and somewhat unprofessional. Although once this place took pride in its quality gastronomic menu, those times are long gone.

I recommend you to visit this restaurant during summer days, because they have a beautiful garden. The atmosphere is nice, the food is very good, quite satisfying for Serbian specialties. I prefer their mixed barbeque (the portions are huge!).
The only problem is that it is a little bit hidden, so you need to search for it. It is in a quiet street in the city center and you only have one board with the name "Sokoj". So you enter a building and walk through to the garden... Hidden paradise :)

First of all, I would like to add to an excellent location guidelines stated by Milano bellow, and to state that street can be easily found since it is one in which speed of vehicles is extremely limited (just look for signs as well as nice pavement).

This restaurant was recommended to us by our close friends and it was a find indeed, it is refreshing to find a old fashioned restaurant (not tavern or “kafana” but a standard city restaurant) without modern or any other “bling” with old fashioned dishes which are prepared in a tried and tested way.

I had excellent veal, meat was excellently prepared, I think that the expression is melt in ones mouth, side dish was also good as was the salad.

Service was good as was the overall atmosphere.

As for the prices they were moderate to low.

I am just wondering if this restarant has any connections with a local government agency, since it has the same name ;)

My two friends and I were recommended this place by our by a Serbian friend, but all she gave us was an address. We discovered that to reach the restaurant you have to go through the front door of what is essentially a residential block, then walk through the building (no more than 20 metres) and out the back into the courtyard; from here the restaurant is visible on the right. Note that although the building itself looks a little tatty as you pass through, the restaurant itself is an immaculate little place: nice and cosy without being poky.

We went on a Friday lunchtime, and the place was busy without being crowded, patronised overwhelmingly by locals, ranging from groups of family/friends, old timers and a few people in suits meeting contacts. It was November, so too cold to eat outside, but the outdoor patio did indeed look like it would be nice, as mentioned in the previous review.

The menu offered local fare...we asked the helpful waiter to explain a few of the dishes to us, which he was more than happy to do. We were satisfied with the quality and quantity of the food, and spent a very pleasant couple of hours over the meal, accompanying the food with some very good Macedonian red wine. We concluded with some coffee and rakija, the local firewater. We were killing time a bit, so we lingered, but were never hurried along. When we requested the bill, it was very reasonable.

All in all, Sokoj is exactly what you want when visiting an unfamiliar foreign city if you're after an unpretentious, friendly place to eat, frequented by locals and not tourists, offering reasonably priced, hearty local cuisine.
