“Closed, But ...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2014

It is a shame that the National Museum is closed (partly) for renovation almost 12 years and that works by Renoir, Monet, Gaughin, Picasso, Rubens, Degas and many others are not on view, but finally, some great exhibitions are on display which are worth the visit - Serbian Impressionism. The entrance is 1 euro! Still, this one or two expos can give you an insight of how great the collections are.

“An easy way to see medieval Serbia”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2014

Well stocked with copies of important medieval frescoes from Serbian monasteries. Many of the originals and inaccessible in Kosovo, or in far flung and remote monasteries elsewhere in Serbia. This provides an quick and easy opportunity to see many of the best frescoes. Free post cards were available in the lobby.

“Good temporary exhibitions”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2014

When I visited Belgrade (May 2014) the National Museum was still mainly closed for refurbishment. However there were two rather good temporary exhibitions. On the ground floor an extensive collection of paintings by Vlaho Bukovac - quite a versatile artist, I particularly liked his Icarus diptych. And on the first floor, several rooms of Serbian art from the Impressionist school. Overall a pleasant way to spend an hour or two.

“When will this place open properly”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 October 2013

I have been visiting Belgrade annually for seven years and only this year have I found this place partly open. They were given a huge amount of money years ago to refurbish the museum but were constantly twiddling thumbs trying to decide what to do.
The only exhibition on show that I attended recently was small, mediocre, early 20th Century Eastern European artists (unknown to me) and even the 100 dinars entry price seemed overpriced for what was on offer. Belgrade has much to do to get up to speed in terms of its museums (Tesla museum excepted). The open air exhibitions in Kalemegdan Park are a much better option (recently they had: Photographs of Brazil; Palaces of Poland; Old Postcards of Belgrade; National Library of Serbia Exhibits)

“under reconstruction”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2013

The museum is currently being refurbished. There was an exposition on Constantine the Great, but it was quite limited, the publicity made a big deal out of it, but the exposition was a bit disappointing really.
