“You'll be surprised by the bill - pleasantly”
Reviewed 28 September 2009

My most recent visit to the place was disappointing compared to the previous ones. They used to be a pure gem with sizeable portions of delicious Carpathian home-like food and home-made-wine for a trifle!

And fair to say, prices continue to please the eye greatly. The full dinner set, including two starters, hot appetizer, soup and main course cost me less than USD15 (the cost of main course only in many Kyiv center-located restaurants).

Regretfully, no more home-made red wine is served, and the waitress was kind enough to dissuade me trying home-made white one. Wine list is quite satisfactory, although I missed home wine that traditionally accompanies unique Carpathian cuisine.

Meal portions turned to average size. Although the menu looks very attractive and many positions bring back lovely memories from Carpathian tours, the food is nothing special any more and tastes like in many average Kyiv cafes.

The only exception is perfectly cooked main courses. Meat (I tried pork, rabbit and veal there) is tender and juicy and well-balanced in spices.

The service here is very good and food recommendations are usually fair.

The spirit of traditional Carpathian “Kolyba” (Hutsul pub or a small restaurant) is supported by the restaurant’s ethnic decoration and interior, and the paintings of notorious Carpathian castles on the walls remind of its Hutsul origin.

The unique thing about the place is that you can either visit a small sauna here, or relax in the cedar barrel (combination of sauna and herbal treatment). A pure Carpathian delight in the middle of the city! But you should make an advance reservation for these facilities.

The restaurant has four halls, two on the ground floor – smoking and non-smoking, one on the balcony and another one downstairs. Unlike many places in Kyiv, non-smoking hall is well-isolated and you are not forced to join smokers behind the wall. The place seems perfect for banquets and large groups; and is quite friendly for families with children.

The place is situated in a distance from the city center and I’m not sure if it worth distant ride purposely to dine there. But if you visit Kyiv zoo located nearby, this is a perfect choice to try traditional Ukrainian cuisine on a budget.
