Parts of the interior date back to the 12th century but the exterior is 18th century. Some of the impressive murals are due to Mikhail Vrubel regarded as the greatest Russian Symbolist painter (abound 1884) including paintings of 4 full length people standing. The eyes follow you & from the balcony, they appear to be 3 dimensional. Inside the front entrance there is a depiction of the devil. You don't see that every day in a church!!! It is out of the centre so getting a cab is a good option. Overall a breathtaking experience. There is a token admission charge. Well worth it.

It's a bit far from central Kiev, but can be reached through a walk through Babi Yar. Babi Yar is a beautiful park with a dark history. It's about a 30min walk through the park from metro to St Cyril's. Make sure you find the correct entrance - just walk around the wall until you find it, it's there.

The frescos are absolutely amazing and vividly colored. You cab even go to the choir balcony and look down. There is a particularly moving fresco up there of the transmission of the holy ghost.

The cashier lady was kind and spoke English. The attendant inside did not speak English, but was very helpful and turned all these lights on to help better see the frescos.

Amazingly beautiful frescoes. We visited quite a few churches, monasteries and cathedrals. I myself do not tire of the immense effort invested in religious art. This one is fabulous.

My visit to St Cyril Monastery lived up to all the things I had read about it. The frescos were lovely. I took a tour but it was in Russian so my friend had to translate. On Saturday afternoon, there is a service so this is not just a museum but an active church. When you finish your tour, take time to walk around outside the monastery. There is a wall near a hospital where 150 patients, doctors and nurses were killed by German soldiers during WWII.

I have been here before many years ago in 1987. This time we came, the monastery was closed for some reason. If open, this is a beautiful and educational place to spend a few hours.
