“first class”
Reviewed 6 July 2013

World-class orchestra playing in a lovely, intimate concert hall. Top ticket runs about $12.50 to $15 - an incredible bargain compared to what you would pay in Vienna or Paris.

“Heaven for Classical Music Lovers”
Reviewed 16 April 2013

Often referred to as the Kiev Philharmonic and the National Philharmonic, it was founded in the 19th century when cultural life in the city flourished. The hall itself was built on the European Square after a permit from the City Council was obtained in 1881. Throughout the years, it has hosted a substantial amount of Russian composers such as Sergei Rachmaninov, Alexander Scriabin and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Despite the heavy Russian influence, the greatest influence came from the Ukrainian Nationalist composer Mykola Lysenko (even today, an annual International Piano Competition named after the Ukrainian composer takes place in the hall). Although most of its priceless archives were destroyed during the Nazi invasion in 1941, the society as well as the concert hall has gone from strength to strength. Even with the advent of popular music taking over, classical music still bounds the capital city every night, courtesy of this magnificent concert hall. Tickets cost as little as UAH 20.00 and it is a landmark not to be missed.
