“Good hotel which provided a hint of the Soviet past.”
Reviewed 12 October 2013

I shouldn't be too hard on this hotel because it was many ways excellent. The room I had was spacious, clean, tidy and well equipped. The free wifi no matter where you were in the hotel was a great feature.
The staff, although sometimes wrestling with their English, were friendly and helpful.
The only odd thing was breakfast. No buffet laid out as you would expect, and not even a menu. So the only waitress came over and said: "Would you like; tea, cornflakes, bread, coffee, milk, cheese, orange juice, omelette..." At this point I had got lost in the options so just asked for the omelette. When it came it was oddly spongy and tasted of nothing more than air.
It was all a bit Sovietesk.

We just completed a short stay in Kiev at the Natsionalny Hotel. This hotel was easy to book on booking.com and it has turned out to be a great place. The front desk and floor staff have been helpful and pleasant. There are enough staff with English skills to make up for my lack of Ukrainian and Russian. We booked two separate rooms - a junior suite and a twin room. Both were well appointed with high-end bathrooms and good beds. The in-room Wi-Fi was very good. The hotel was immaculate. It was a good value as well - especially for a weekend stay since it seems that most of the guests are business/government visitors. This is located only a short distance outside the commercial/tourist center. That's actually a plus because there's almost no traffic noise at night. Taxi service at the hotel is excellent and it is very reasonable to get almost anywhere in Kiev for $12-25USD by taxi. It seemed that the drivers were well known at the hotel, so we felt comfortable without having to negotiate a fare. There are 2 Metro stops located about a 15 minute walk away. I'd recommend the Instytutka St. entrance to the Khreschatyk station, but the Arsenalna station is also convenient. Metro service is great and very inexpensive, but just plan a minimum of 30 minutes to get anywhere - most of it is spent on escalators - you'll see what I mean on your first trip! There are 3 grocery stores within 2 blocks of the hotel to pick up snacks, beer, wine, etc. The hotel restaurant was very reasonably priced and had excellent food - definitely give it a try. It's open all day and into the night, so it's really convenient as well. Most of the restaurants in the area serve continuously, so there's no problem getting a meal almost anytime. If you are trying to contact the hotel by email and don't get an answer just give them a call on Skype - just remember that there is a 7 hour time difference and you want to catch the day staff during the work week for arrangements or reservation questions.

I was very positively surprised with this hotel, did not expect this high level and kind client-service.

The hotel is located in a nice green area between Khresyatik and Arsenalna metro station, near to Ukrainian parliament house.

It has a very nice lobby with beautiful old-times design chandeliers (which are actually ordered brand-new). Hotel has a fresh renovation - the rooms as well the suites are very well designed and in a fresh condition.

Free wifi is available everywhere in the hotel and the signal strength is very okay.

The suite contained 2 rooms - bedroom and well-equipped stylish living room with a table for 4 - suitable even for business meetings. I liked the living-room a lot! What You see on the photos in booking.com and tripadvisor - the reality is really as beautiful. I especially enjoyed the the karelian birch wood, which is used as a material for the doors and the furniture!

Restaurant is of high level - a quiet place with good atmosphere and reasonable prices. We spent a whole day of company meetings there!

The staff is very friendly and well-trained. Although it consists of mainly women above 40, they are good. It is a unique opportunity to see the people from soviet times - who have been trained well and received the level of modern era service standards.

I highly recommend this hotel and will go back, whenever it is affordable (it was a special offer in booking.com, I payed only 120 euro for the night in suite).

Room Tip: try the suite - it is worth it!

This hotel is bringing you back in time in a very good and surprising sense. It is very clean and neat, yet all the interior design still remembers Soviet Union. We loved the food and the room. Service is helpful and speaks English.

My Ukrainian friends warned me that Kiev hotels were in the rule crummy and overpriced, so I was a bit wary. Booking.com, however, suggested a room in the Natsionalny for a very decent price (75 euro incl breakfast, so this must have been pre-EC2012) and I took it, just for it's location. But it turned out to be brilliant.

The lobby is huge with lots of copper, marble, smoky mirrors and lots and lots of red carpeting. It features some shops, a bar with huge flatscreen and cashmachines. Check-in spoke English, albeit grudgingly. The room was modern and fairly large with a king-size bed (nice and firm) and had all the trimmings including state-of-the-art airco, flatscreen, WiFi, stereo in the bathroom, complimentary bottles of water etc etc etc The room itself was in excellent state, very clean and quiet. After a brilliant night's sleep, breakfast was made on order and decent enough by any standard. Service was grumpy - of course - but brisk and to-the-point. When I asked her if there was a printer I could use, the lady at reception frowned at me for quite some time, sighed despondently and then made sure the manager came down to open up the already closed conference centre for me and start up a computer. Service without the smile. There was no mention of this on my bill, by the way.

The location of the hotel is excellent, all the sights and subway station (Arsenalny) within easy walking distance. In my opinion, THE place to stay in Kiev.

Room Tip: the higher up you are, the better the view.

Only spent 1 night here, found that most everyone had some comand of the English language. We all got along fine. The bar, hidden on the 4th floor is small and cozy. drinks are inexpensive and gthe bartender is freindly.
Dinner in the restaurant on the 3rd floor was outstanding, gad the borscht and then the beef stroganoff. Both were made on the premisis from scratch! Highly recomened.
Rooms, had the Jr. Suit were outstanding, great views of the city.
The hotel seems empty of guests but it could be the time of year.
It is very clean.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a JR suite

All was perfect !
A fantastic suite at the top of the hotel with view on the ukrainian parlement ( for the price of a junior suite, nice gift ! ).
People very nice, the suite was just gorgeous, nice furtinures, nice bathroom, nice flat screen TV in bed room and living room.
Nice decoration in the hotel and the suite.
The best deal of Kiev with a great location, 5 minutes walk to Kreshatik and the independance square, next to the garden close to the ukrainian parlement and the Dynamo Kiev stadium, the love's bridge ; next to the ukrainian president's office.
