“good value and great location”
Reviewed 24 April 2011

Staying in Kiev, like much of easten Europe, means you generally have to choose between an extortionate decent hotel and an affordable hovel. Hotel Rus really turned out to be a great find- centrally located and at about 65GBP it's a place worth making a note of. True- many strangely-dressed women in the lobby specially in the evening- but just go about your own business and it's fine. Have no idea what the food is like as I had an early morning flight so didn't have time for breakfast

Basically ok. Cheap transport to the airport. Much better than taking a taxi. Rooms old and small. Nice view from rooms. Breakfast buffet was terriable. Impossiple to talk to staff, they only speak ukranian/russian and are not there for the guests! Price not in correspondence with reallity.

This hotel can win a reward for the smallest rooms in the world !
Bad points:
1. Very small rooms
2. Water is not hot enough
3. Bath tub is very small
4. air con is not controlled in the room
5. Bars are very boring
6. Lobby is full of men occupying all best seats in the bar area . In fact the tables are always reserved for them. Apparently they are security for the hotel however I have never noticed them working. It made us a bit uncomfortable when in the bar.
Good points:
1. Fantastic breakfast
2. Bed is comfortable
3. Stuff in the hotel are very friendly and professional
4. Fantastic location
5. Good sushi

When you travel in an ex-Soviet country, you find many scars left over from the ruination of a society by Communism. The Hotel Rus is struggling to rise above that level, but the operative word is "struggling." They would be a 1-star hotel in most Western countries, but for Kyiv they're actually not all bad. Rooms are SMALL, but reasonably clean. The bed was quite hard, but surprisingly comfortable if you have a bad back. (I think they must have last changed the bedspread around 1997 or so.) Restrooms are clean, but be careful climbing in and out of that high-walled bathtub; you could fall and break your head. The water is NOT safe to drink, but there's a tiny little "grocery store" across the street and to the left that sells Swissalp bottled water. I strongly recommend you buy several bottles and only consume that water, not Kyiv water. Also use it to brush your teeth. Hotel lobby is cosmopolitan at best, with a nasty old ex-KGB agent for a grumpy security guard. Restaurant is marginally adequate. You won't starve, but you've had better at Denny's. There's a bar on the 2nd floor that's kind of cozy, and the bartenders are competent. (Spare yourself drinking Russian beer; it was designed to clean the treads on Russian tanks, not to be drunk.) There's a much nicer hotel next door, the Kyivskaya Rus, with better restaurants and a better bar, just so you know. Hot and cold running Prostitutes line up outside the hotel late at night. Elevator is tiny and cramped. There's also an unadvertised little bar, I think it's on about the 10th or 12th floor; ask. That's a pleasant place to meet with friends later at night. Hotel laundry service is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive; plan on washing your clothes in the sink or bathtub. There is always at least one front desk clerk who speaks English, and you can exchange foreign currency in the lobby across from the front desk. Beware of the local police (Militzia). They are corrupt and prey on foreign guests walking near the hotel, seeking bribes to leave you alone. And, they carry machine guns, so don't back-talk them. For what you get, and considering the exchange rate of the Ukrainian Hrivnia, this hotel charges about twice what it's worth. But, they all do in Kyiv.

rooms are quite old fashioned and not very nice bathroom + they smell smoke (at least my room seemed to be smoking! and all other non smoking rooms were occupied already!)
Not very sound proof !
The prices compared with other Hotel in Kiev is OK but would not return
Food in restaurant wasn't great and staff not very friendly nor helpful! (coming from European country - I am used to more customer oriented service)

This is the second time I have stayed at The Rus Hotel. The staff is always friendly, speak English very well, rooms are always clean and ALL staff is VERY attentive to guests. Breakfast is incredible with a fabulous buffet, service for ANYTHING you need is outstanding. Rooms are quickly made up in the morning and this hotel is absoultely the Gem of Kiev regardless of the price.

If you have never stayed here, next trip to Kiev you owe it to yourself to try this hotel. Once you do, you wont stay anywhere else. It is without question the best bang for your buck in all of Kiev. Only thing I dont understand is why this hotel is rated 3 stars--it deserves more.

Hotel Rus was a good value in Kiev. It is very clean and affordable. I'm tall, and the bed was a bit small. Only a few blocks from the main street, the location was good. Other than a grumpy waitress at the sushi restaurant, the service was very good. I was robbed in Kiev and they facilitated a report to the police and were sincerely sorry for my experience. The sushi restaurant and room service was very good.
