“Ukraine Experience - Part 1”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 December 2011

An international competition took a group of us to Kiev in September 2011. (For Part 2 of our Ukraine Experience seek out Alushta and Wellness Spa Hotel More). I researched for the hotel nearest to the competition venue and, coupled with the fact that it was the hotel for the event officials, landed on Lybid Hotel. Well situated, but not city centre. Near to public transport (Metro, buses & trams), restaurants and supermarkets. Staff were fairly fluent in English, and overall helpful and friendly with the exception of the cashier at their Bureau de Change who was very grumpy when a large group descended and asked for local currency (a down side to Ukraine is that one cannot buy local currency prior to travelling and it has to be changed back - or lose it - before returning from whence one came).

The hotel was basic but clean, the food plentiful and quite varied and definitely 'fit for purpose' for our group's needs. At short notice we booked an evening event taking over the restaurant, a complete success only made possible by the flexibility of the restaurant manager and staff.

In the basement of the hotel is a 24/7 Night Club which attracts a less desirable clientele - the 'ladies' sitting in the hotel bar waiting to pounce on unsuspecting, or perhaps suspecting, men. It appeared to be an acceptable practice wherever we went!

Were I to go Kiev again and not tied to a specific area, I would probably opt to be more central and perhaps pay a bit more money.

For those of you heading for the football events in 2012 - its a cheap, clean, value for money hotel - but remember to research where the games will be along with transportation in and around Kiev before deciding where to stay.

Great staff and very helpful. The room was comfortable and the bathroom was very modern. food was not great and could do with a more international menu. There are lots of bar girls but thats the ukraine for you. I would defaintly stay there again the big plus is the location.

It is an Soviet Style hotel with rooms, that was reconstructed more than 10 years ago, with poor windows. You will listen during all night traffic noise and car's horns.
Internet speed is very poor and connection is not stable. Internet acess will cost you 50 UAH per night.
But is is the not worst thig. The worsk thing is that hotell staff is steal money from quests. In mine case i leave wallet at room during 30 min, when I was on the breakfast. After that there were no money it it. Ihave lost approximetely 200 $. Hotel security didn't detect any illegal acces to my room during breakfast.
If you will stay at the Lybid hotel don't leave valuable things in the room. Hotel rooms is not equipped by lock box.
Aleksey

It is Ukraine, so assume non-European and American standards.
Very nice location and splendid views. Internet only works in lobby and they charge for daily use. Ensure you know how your computer works. Lack of technical staff for any computer issues. It has a business center to fax and use computer.
I was surprised by the night time entertainment; yes, prostitution is available. Bar staff was pleasant.
Rooms were not unpleasant; basic rooms with an old television with 2 English speaking channels- BBC and another as I remember.
I was unimpressed with the staff. It was a job for them. Customer seems to be a distraction to them. Staff is not helpful. They do their job to minimal expectations.
Shower was actually wonderful- nice water pressure.
Need something more out of a room other than to sleep, I would recommend better. Basic needs- then this is fine. Breakfast buffet was nice. Not bad. Comfortable enough.
Note: There are much more worse places to stay.
Hope this helps.

Room Tip: No internet in rooms. Had to go to the lobby to connect.

had to spent all together 7 nights here and will not recommend this hotel to anyone.
Rooms were filthy, Matresses well worn, the bed was a metal rack dating back to the time of Leonid Brezhnev, windows not soundproof and in the shower "nice" little creatures watched me take a shower.
The reception staff could not have been less polite, the words "thank you" etc. are not commonly used there.
No mini bar available, food and service in the restaurant was OK, unless they closed the Restaurant at short notice because of a private celebration, leaving Customers without food.

Shame, Kiev doesn't deserve such a Hotel, it gives foreigners a false impression about the
Country.
