Whoever is in the kitchen at Barkas knows what he is doing.
We started with creme of muscle soup - delectable and a warm seafood salad. Both where above average; the soup velvety and full of plump muscles and the salad delicate with a variety of crustaceans and pieces of tender fish.
Next from the not-fish section a superb rack of lamb done with pistachios and a wonderful wine reduction sauce. We also sampled the duck confit with figs. The figs were in the reduction sauce and the rosemary complemented the dish to perfection.
We chose a fine Crimean Chardonnay from Esse on the recommendation of the waiter. We were not disappointed. The wine selection is good if not a little pricey.
Again on the recommendation of the waiter we both had the chef's special cheese cake for dessert. It was a light lemony cheese cake sitting on a boozy pound cake base basking in a sweet lemony reduction. Fantastic.
Barkas is by far the best restaurant we have sampled to date in what has been a week of good to great restaurants in the Ukraine. This is a great one.
A little pricy by Kiev standards but a real bargain anywhere in the west.
