“Nice spot for a church picnic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2013

This lake gets visited every few months by our church, Iglesia Bautista Emanuel from the city of Cojutepeque. We rent a campsite that has a soccer field, pavilion and a nice view of the lake and conduct our baptisms there. When we are done there are tables to prepare food as well as a volleyball net in the grass and restrooms available for use. However, I would change/go to the bathroom before you leave for the lake if at all possible if using these facilities. Enjoy your time there! Food is available along the road if you would like to stop and by something during your travels.

“Neat atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 May 2013

A lake in the crater of a volcano. Went to the public beach, very busy. Rented a boat for a small tour. Lots of small cafes. there was a "lighthouse" you can climb to take beautiful pictures. Enjoyable day. Only a minor complaint...no place to buy ice cream! Lots of other items though.

“Nice views, great chorizo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 January 2013

Not sure if there's anything to see right at the lake, we just went for the views. Best view is from the town of Cojutepeque. Stopped in at a farm with a restaurant with a great view over the lake. Bonus: Cojutepeque has the best chorizo in El Salvador, make sure you order some.

“Nice lake in troubled area”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 December 2012

Located in a volcano basin, the Ilopango lake has had it's share of problems, as it tends to overflow when hurricane season causes intense rains in El Salvador. This damages the surrounding properties, resulting in a limited tourist offer: Private bungalows and such are well maintained, while the public area is dirty and chaotic. If you have access to private ranches, you will have a great view of the volcanoes and hills of the crater rim and enjoy a very nice atmosphere within 30 minutes of the city. The public areas? not so much.

“great place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 October 2012

My family spent the day at this lake with friends that were members of a club. We sat in a thatched roof hut right on the beach while they brought us fried fish, plantains and soup. It was a great day to get a way from the busy city. We lounged in the hammocks with the perfect breeze. We swam in the water for a while and it was very nice. This is definitely a must see if you are close to the capital.
