“Great jungle experience for kids and adults!”
Reviewed 2 January 2012

We highly recommend this day-trip. You get to experience the real rainforest with a good guide.
It is about a 3 hours walk but not very difficult (our 7 years old did it with no problems ... and yes if you sign a waiver even less than 10 years old can go on the island).
We saw all kind of wildlife and got to ask many questions.
You can book the trip yourself from the Smithsonian website at http://www.stri.si.edu/english/visit_us/barro_colorado/
We book few days in advance and had no problems. Each guide will bring a max of 10 people which is very good (we were just 5 ... or family!)

“A real worth while experience”
Reviewed 6 October 2011

The Smithsonian has been running a research center there for many years, and visitors pay US $15 for a visit, with boat and lunch inclusive. The guides are biologists cinducting reasearch. A must for everyone interested in nature. We saw many different animals, from crocs to monkeys, and beautiful birds. The folks there are wonderful.

“Barro Colorado Smithsonian Research Station - Great Trip but Plan Ahead”
Reviewed 24 February 2010

My husband and I visited Barro Colorado in Jan. 2010 and really enjoyed the trip. Our B&B in Panama City made the reservation for us in July and it seems that you really must make your plans that far in advance - our group was only 8 visitors. Our Smithsonian tour guide met us at the dock and made the boat trip with us. Upon arrival, we had a light breakfast and then a brief introduction to the island and the work being done there.

We then took a hike, about 3 hours. It's a realtively easy hike although there are some rather steep treks. The trails are clear, in excellent condition and mostly paved. On the hike we heard about the research being done and looked for wildlife. We saw the howler, capuccin and spider monkeys, agouti, bats, birds (including trogans). Following the hike, we had lunch and had a tour of some of the research facility.

It was a great trip and truly informative. So, if you are interested in wildlife and the Smithsonian's research and can plan ahead, we'd highly recommend a trip there.
