Mamallena was my first "hostal" experience and I hope to have better experiences in the future. The staff were great but the limited a/c left a lot to be desired. We reserved 2 beds and only rooms with 1 were available. The toilet rooms were very uncomfortable and the toilets often did not flush properly. Showers always ran cold and sometimes not at all. The room was very small but clean. Staff was great in helping us with our huge bags up and down MANY stairs. Kitchen was kept clean and towel service was good. The location was not great, but the local bus was close. Wifi was available but went out at times.

We booked to stay at this hostel but moved the
Next night. The location is terrible and it is much better to stay in Casco Viejo. The staff who booked our San Blas trip were incompetent at organising the transfer to the boat and rude. We were due to be picked up at 5am, the car did not arrive until after 9am. They lied to us and said the car came and went, it didn't and we wee waiting on the street for 4 hours. Additionally they do have a heat TV area where there are signs asking you to be quiet when people are watching a movie. However the staff would play loud music all night making it impossible to enjoy the sofa/tv area. They also state that there is a swimming pool, that is also a lie. There really are better
Options than this hostel and better locations.

Thats unfortunate, we love the location, close to public transport, the Cinta Csotera, budget bars and restaurants, its a real backpacker/local area. Granted, its within a 2 minute walk of a starbucks, but there is a McDonalds that close! Casco Viejo is a great area, but you also pay for it with not a lot of budget shops and restaurants close by. I think its a bit strong to say the staff lied to as well, with regards to San Blas, and you have no basis to say that. Problems do happen with the San Blas transport and its beyond our control unfortunately. We make the bookings and pass on the information to the owner/drivers and they do the rest. if they told us they were there and you weren't, theres not a lot we could do about that except try to fix the problem. Mistakes happen, and not everything runs according to plan in the third world.

Stayed for 2 nights in a dorm in Febuary before we did the san blas trip which we booked through them.

Pretty average hostel, beds are comfy and pretty big for bunks. Good a/c that isnt set to an Arctic temperature like most other hostels.

Overall appearance is pretty shabby, old kitchen utensils and kitchen in general is pretty grubby.
Busy place which isnt necessarily a bad thing but hard to find any chill out areas that are free.

Not a great location either as had to take a taxis to both old town and multiplaza. Staff not very helpful in regard to giving directions or giving info.

Bottom line is that there are better options like San Francisco Inn.

Hostal Mamallena has a great laid back vibe, and is an awesome place to stay, whether you're passing throughg Panama City or staying for a couple nights.

My boyfriend and I were just passing through, and although we were one day late for our reservation they still accommodated us. The dorms were clean and the beds relatively big for bunk beds. The kitchen was a decent size and really well stocked. You can't beat free pancake breakfast! We felt very welcomed there which was great considering it wa our first stop on our trip and we were a bit culture shocked.

We have also heard from others that they have great prices booking tours to go to Columbia and San Blas.

Stayed at Mamallena, at the start and end of my trip. It's in a great central location, equidistant from the old town and the new town, with plenty of amenities close at hand. I stayed in a private room which had AC and a fan, was spotlessly clean, and even had a damn comfy double bed. There is also plenty of space to chillax both indoors and outdoors. All the staff are really friendly and knowledgeable on Panama city and the rest of the country. The boss of the Hostel 'Ricardo ', a true English gent, helped arrange and plan the most amazing excursions and had some great tips on where was good to eat and drink within the city and further afield. Would recommend to anyone wanting a box office Panama experience to stay at Hostal Mamallena, thanks again for an awesome trip.

We stayed at the hostel for a total of 5 nights over our 2 week stay in Panama. Our private double was perfect for what we needed-and aircon is an added bonus!

Staff are always on hand 24/7 which is great and they always have chilled beers and water at reception..what more can you need?!

The manager helped us organise a fantastic trip to San Blas (a must see) he was great at giving info for our stay.

It's not a party hostel, but there's always people about if you want to hang out or head in to the city.

We'd definitely head back and would be keen to check out their other hostels.

We arrived in Panama City right after Carnival and chose the Mamallena Hostal as the first place for us to stay. The staff was really friendly, warm, and very helpful. The hostal itself was very clean. You always saw people around cleaning something. We got a private room with a/c and found out that they turn the a/c on at 9pm. We thought it was broken initially when we first turned it on in the midafternoon. Showers are cold, but in the Panama City heat it feels really good. Hammocks are located in the back where you can relax after the long airplane trip and chill out.

The other people staying at the hostal were very friendly. Pancake breakfasts are free and there is a little market at the end of the street toward the left where you can get food and pantry items. It's about a 10-15 minute walk to an outside market where the street it closed off to cars and they have fruit and artisan vendors selling all sorts of items. It's also a 20 minute walk to Casco Viejo which is the old city.

All in all it was a great place to stay when first coming to Panama. I highly recommend them.
