Owner description: This gorgeous and majestic National Theater was built in the early 20th century, and still retains its elegant charm. Today, its stage hosts classical music, theater and dance performances—and they’re incredibly affordable. If you can’t make one of the performances, at least make time to check out the beautifully restored and preserved space.

“Great Night at the Opera at the Teatro Nacional”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014

I always enjoy visiting the Teatro Nacional both in tours by day and performances at night. The theatre is an historic ornate building first opened in 1908 in the historic Casco Viejo district. It is definitely worth taking a look inside during a tour. It is still being used as a venue for local performances so it is worth attending a show. Last night my girlfriend and I had the pleasure to see an opera entitled "Carmen y otros Gitanos" with the National Symphony Orchestra. After the show we enjoyed a nice meal and drinks in Plaza Bolivar. While visiting Panama this is a must see!

“When in Casco Viejo try to see inside.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2014

It's not always open but when in Casco it is sure worth it to go inside. If you are staying a while you may want to see a show here just to be in this recently restored theater. Thank Heavens they saved it! Some of hte best things to see in Panama are not well advertised as people (unlike the Costa Ricans) are not good here at marketing the beauties of their own country.

“A landmark worth seeing.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 May 2014

As mentioned by other reviews, the old Town is in the process of being restored to it's former glory, thankfully.
The best way to experience the national theater, is by attending a performance of the National Symphony Orchestra, if you are lucky to be visiting when they are in town.
I could not find an internet link for their schedule, but ask at the theater, you may get lucky.
This is a grand property, in a fantastic setting. Just keep in mind, it is an area in transition. Very much like an open air museum, that you get to enter free of charge. Have fun.

“Not impressed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2014 via mobile

The theatre stands within the Casco Viejo or Old Colonial City area, which is itself a must-walk-around and juxtaposes rooflessly ruined homes with those gorgeously restored. The theatre itself - not great in size, not grand in presence.
