“A Fantastic Option in Casco Viejo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2014

My spouse and I stayed at Casa Sucre for 3 nights and had an absolutely delightful time. The innkeepers, Alyse and Rich, are two of the warmest, most gracious people that we have ever met. The property itself is something in between a proper boutique hotel and B&B and is all the more charming for it. The rooms have been meticulously decorated the coffeehouse/ café where breakfast is served feels so well integrated into the neighborhood. The location is superbly convenient to picking up the hop-on/hop-off bus while also affording a great position to begin a Casco Viejo walking tour.

One piece of advice – if you are someone who has to have silence and darkness to sleep well, either bring earplugs and an eyemask or ensure that you book one of the interior-facing rooms or apartments. There is a traffic cop on the corner who is whistle-happy and taxis on the street in Panama City honk their horns to indicate that they’re available for fares. Even though the inn is not on a “busy” street, there is street noise that may keep light sleepers awake.

Overall, we would not hesitate to stay at Casa Sucre again. Everything about it had a unique signature that you won’t find at a cookie-cutter property. BTW, the breakfast tamale in banana leaves is a MUST TRY for breakfast. There is a reason this property is so highly reviewed by folks who have stayed there – it has a lot to do with the rooms and property itself, but even more to do with the innkeepers and how gracious and welcoming they are. If you want a break from 4-star sameness, Casa Sucre is the perfect choice in Panama City!

Room Tip: Interior courtyard-facing if you're a light sleeper.

I stayed here at the Casa Sucre Boutique Hotel with my family over the Holidays in December for 2 nights. From the first glance, the hotel seemed very nice and homey. The downstairs had a nice small courtyard with a couple of bedroom suites alongside it, and upstairs there was a very nice lounge area with doors leading to more bedrooms. The rooms were clean, and the beds were pretty comfortable. The owner was very nice and hospitable. When considering only the looks of this, the Casa Sucre Boutique Hotel is quite polished and charming, and fits right into the old Spanish ornamental architecture of this section of Panama City.

HOWEVER

The reason I'm not giving this a 4 or 5-star rating is because of the noise, and this is no peccadillo. Since I don't see any other reviews commenting on this much, this issue may have only stemmed from it being the holiday season between Christmas and New Years. However, when my family and I stayed here, it was nearly impossible to sleep. The B&B is located literally right on the corner of two streets, and cars whiz by only feet from where you sleep. When we stayed here, it seemed every thirty seconds a car would drive by and honk super loudly and obnoxiously, and this went deep into the night and early morning hours. This rendered it basically impossible to sleep both nights we stayed here, and therefore we were exhausted during most of our time spent in Panama City.

Once again, this may be attributed to simply the fact that it was the holiday season and the locals seemed to be out and about late into the night, though I can't be completely sure of this.

Though this may be contradictory to most of the reviews for this B&B, I cannot really recommend the Casa Sucre Boutique Hotel to anyone who wants to go to sleep before 4 AM, for certain during the holiday season as this is impossible. Everything about this place is very nice, including its close location to many really cool attractions, but the issue with actually sleeping here really put a damper on our stay here.

We flew all day from Idaho and ended up in Casa Sucre. We met Alyce and were warmly greeted. We had a great room with balcony over looking the historic town. We had a great sleep and spent 2 more nights. We walked all around town and ate at Rene's. This is a must. Then topped off the evening at the rooftop bar sipping on a drink and overlooking the new city. Again a great sleep and then hang out in the coffee house for an hour and enjoying a Panamanian breakfast! Alyce and Rich are great!! What a warm and inviting facility!! Oh yes, the jack of all trades is Thomas. He knows all and will accommodate you with information or provide a tour. We can not say enough about this great place!!!!!!

Room Tip: We had the room by the office....very comfortable with nice bathroom

We stayed at Casa sucre after we'd been turfed out of another local hotel that had overbooked us on a hotel booking site. The hotel has a fantastic location right in the old town. The cafe had tasty breakfast too. The owners were really friendly and concerned for our enjoyment, asking every morning how we had slept! Would highly recommend this hotel, especially the loft suite which has a little kitchen with fridge for keeping drinks in. The furniture and fittings all felt 'high-end', like no expense was spared kitting the rooms out. Thanks again for helping us out in a sticky situation!

My mom and I stayed at Casa Sucre for 2 nights following an organized tour. Skeptical at first about staying in Casco Viejo, Rich and Alyce put our concerns to rest. After a reservation mix-up, we ended up in the Crema Apartment, a spacious "suite" with a private entrance off the street and direct access to the private inner courtyard. It was clean and well maintained. It came equipped with AC and ceiling fan, a full modern kitchen, wifi, safe (although we couldn't figure out how to use it) TV, comfortable seating area, separate bedroom and lovely bathroom with shower (with a nice assortment of soap and shampoo). A hair dryer would be a nice addition... We also had access to a beautiful common area on the upper floor with beautiful art pieces, furniture and a view of the courtyard. A nice choice of breakfast items was included, served in their popular Casa Sucre Cafe attached to the property. The property itself is located on a busy corner in Casco Viejo, but we had no issues with noise as our suite had a soundproof door separating the bedroom from outside disruption.
Thank you Rich and Alyce for going that extra mile to make our stay memorable!

Room Tip: Choose a room on the inner courtyard or one where you are able to block out street noise at night...

I would categorize the accommodation as a spectacular B@B owned an operated by a charming
and service oriented couple. I stayed in an apartment with a private entrance on the street and an attached courtyard,
The space was sizeable and very reasonably priced given the location in the old city. The Coffee Shop which is also where breakfast is served is rated as the number 3 restaurant in Panama City.
I can only think of positives for this property. If this type of accommodation suits you, look no further. The manager of the property is also available to be a tour guide at a reasonable cost. I retained him for an entire week.

A great little place in a safe and historic part of town. Ideal for sightseeing and very friendly helpful owners. Only slight criticism was the poor choice of breakfast but there were good options elsewhere ....
We would certainly come back.

Room Tip: Try and get the loft room which is hidden away in the courtyard - no noise from street. 2 floors wit...
