Stayed here twice - the first time was certainly not the best. The rook they gave me was incorrect as per my online request as they put me next to the elevator shaft, which, is not a good place to be given you can hear the elevators rumbling all night. The room was clean but the cleaner had forgotten some garbage and left this on side. I did ask for a rook change, but that only happened on the second night....

The second time I stayed - the delivery of the room was a lot better. Managed to meet the needs of the original request.

The hotel is in a great location and has everything you need. The Lobby is great, the business center staff are very helpful too. Front desk staff are very polite and responsive in both English and Spanish. The breakfast buffet is awesome..... Great fresh food - and cater for everyone.....

I would recommend this hotel, but book online a few days before and ensure your requests are delivered as you may also get a better deal than booking the night/day before.

Room Tip: Half way down the hall and "away" from the elevator shafts

Stayed at the Riu Plaza Panama for 2 nights in August 2011. The hotel is close to Tocumen International airport & very conveniently located close to the main attractions- the Panama Canal tour & the Casco Viejo. The hotel itself is grand- less than a year old & with a impressive lobby as soon as you walk in. The rooms are fairly spacious too, with very modern bathrooms, though the florescent green theme they had in the rooms was a bit bizarre for a business hotel.

Our rate also included breakfast & we found the breakfast more than adequate. Delicious coffee, fruits, lots of breads & croissants, eggs in various styles, juices, the usual Riu breakfast. They did have a pool which was fairly small, but when we were there, it was not crowded at all. The hotel is in the main financial district, so it was surrounded by tall buildings, but the pool still managed to catch some sunlight. They even have a small gift shop, right off the lobby, but as is the case in most Rius, it was over priced. Save your shopping for when you go to the Casco Viejo or elsewhere.

The main advantage of the hotel is the location. We paid $12 for a taxi one way to take the 4 of us to the causeway for our pickup for the Canal tour. And we paid $4 for the trip to the Old City. The rate to the airport with lugguge was $43. We had a nice stay. Overall it’s a very modern, very glitzy hotel & though not cheap, our check-in, check out & stay was seamless;-)

I have to mention one bizarre incident, which has never happened with us at any other Riu earlier. I had made & then cancelled an initial reservation when we were having some change in plans & then made another reservation before we travelled, both were done directly on their website. . Checked in & paid by credit card. 2 weeks after we left, I got an email asking for credit card details so that they could process the refund for the earlier reservation. Funny thing is, we had not been charged for either reservation, as the hotel only charges your credit card on check-in & that is an universal Riu policy. I ignored the email, but it seemed a little bizarre. Other than that, w ehad absolutely no problems at all.

Overall this hotel is very nice and the staff were helpful. However the building itself has major issues, it is brand new which makes me worry even more.

At 3:30 AM we heard the sound of rain in our 20th floor room, the entire bathroom was flooding, from the ceiling. Water gushing out of light sockets, etc... Front desk didn't know what was going on, lucky we had a 6AM flight to catch and just left a little earlier. Hallway had about an inch of water and water running down the walls. On checkout the front desk said someone on a higher floor pulled the fire alarm, which if true is more worrying that no alarms went off to warn them or guests?

This hotel is located in the city center and it is very convenient for business and leaisure. The service is excellent, and the rate usually includes a sumptuous buffet breakfast.
I highly recomend this hotel over all the others in Panama city.

My wife and I went to the Riu Plaza's Renova Spa for an evening of relaxation and papering. The entrance to the spa is fine and the reception is courteous. We were escorted t the changing areas.

The gentlemen locker room/bathroom/showers were quite small and provide no seating to assist in changing. The lockers contained and bathrobe, towel, and terry cloth slippers which were very comfortable. The relaxation lounge outside of the locker room and was quite nice with plenty of lounge chairs and towels available. The staff was quite helpful and accommodating, but the massage room is where the bad design and construction becomes very apparent.

All was proceeding perfectly until halfway through the massage when a conference or large meeting began to take place right outside the spa. The massage rooms share a wall with the conference rooms! The noise level in the massage room was ridiculous. There is no soundproofing whatsoever. It felt as if all the attendees of the conference or meeting were in the massage room with us.

This did not end at all and continued till after our massages were over.

Then in the locker room/shower/bathroom there are only two showers and no plastic slippers to use. And I repeat that there is no seating to assist in getting dressed. Getting dress is not so easy to do on a wet floor with no where to sit down to put on socks and shoes.

With all the spa choices that are now available in Panama, I can't say I will ever go back to the Renova Spa.

I stayed at the Riu in July of this year. At first glance yes this is a wonderful place. The rooms are nice and the breakfast is pretty good. However, the service is horrible. I got charged twice to stay here. I purchased off price line and since my confirmation hadn't come up yet in their computer they went ahead and charged me but said they would return it at the end. Then I booked for a day at the Spa and this was AWFULL my service professional was on texting the Entire time of the Service. I stopped the service and she begged me to continue or she would be fired. I should of let her be fired. All in all this is a shame a waste of a beautiful hotel because the staff is not friendly and I would never stay at another RIU.
