Owner description: Panama Marine Adventures is the leader tour operator in Panama Canal Tours aboard the MV Pacific Queen. We offer two options to experience the Panama Canal and its history up close. The Partial Transit tour has a duration of 4 to 5 hours. It goes through the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks, underneath the Bridge of the Americas and Centennial Bridge and Gaillard Cut. The Full Transit tour has a duration of 8 to 9 hours. You will transit through the three set of locks: Miraflores, Pedro Miguel and Gatun Locks, commencing in Pacific Ocean and ending in the Atlantic Ocean. In both options you will observe some of the works that are being held for the Canal's expansion.

We made a partial transit southbound. The bus to Gamboa dock on Gatun Lake was old, but it's only a 45 minute ride. The narrator was excellent and spoke English perfectly. The lunch was quite good and very efficient (we ate while in a lock chamber).Best views are from outside, but there is plenty of air conditioned space as well.

We took a 1/2 transit of the Canal and had a great time. The narration was excellent and the lunch that was provided was very good. The show stopper was the canal itself and all that happens to get a ship through. If you are ever in panama, you need to do this 1/2 transit of the Canal!

There are several companies that do full and partial transits of the canal. They run once or twice a month, so I had found 3 companies that were doing the full transit on the day we were there. We went with this one because of the cost and other TA reviews. This company does not pick you up and drop you off at your hotel. You have to make your way to Flamenco Island and back on your own. We pre-arranged a taxi through our hotel. Admittedly, I am a History Channel/Discovery Channel/NatGeo/Science Channel nerd, but I thought this tour was fantastic. The guide was so interesting and knowledgeable. Not only did he talk about the history of the canal and its present operation and expansion, but he also pointed out and explained things we passed along the way - wildlife, various types of ships, etc. Not just a dry recitation of a prewritten speech, but an in the moment interaction.
The full transit is a long day on a boat, but some time is spent eating breakfast, lunch, and snacks, and a lot of the time, people are up watching the previous lock closing or the next lock opening, or spotting ships, or watching the forest for monkeys and birds, or the banks for crocodiles. We saw 5 crocodiles in the lake, and some tarpins in the locks with us.
The canal has so much - history, politics, geography, zoology, commerce, land management and nature, human drama - if you're remotely interested in this sort of thing, I'd highly recommend it.

My wife and I recently had opportunity to board the 24 passenger catamaran Discovery for a three day tour through the Panama Canal. From the moment you step on board you are struck by the friendliness of the crew, all of whom do a bit of everything to make you feel special. The ship itself is stunning with its full service bar, dining room, lounge and comfortable cabins with full windows and private bath. One and two passenger kayaks are at the rear of the ship and after the crew helps you in, they are hydraulically lowered into the water for your recreational use. Food and service is unexcelled and the canal passage by daylight fascinating and instructive.

The half-canal boat trip was really all the canal one needs. The boat was crowded, but the staff did an amazing job of serving lunch to all 300+ passengers in minimum time.
