Recently went with Luis from Lumo Tours to Contadora Island to look for whales. What an adventure. Had been whale watching in New Zealand where they used sonars and other sophisticated technology to locate whales. After taking a ferry from Panama City we immediately boarded a small motor boat and went whaling. Bit antiquated methodology. The guide said whales had been seen at 6am that morning (about 6 or 7 hours earlier) a short ways away. Away we went. No whales, but our guides were in contact with other "whalers" by cell phone and soon we were notified that whales were sighted and off we went. Success. Kinda like whaling in early days using small boats when they sighted and then shouted "There she blows". We followed a mother and her calf for about an hour, constantly fascinated by their diving and then re-appearing somewhere else. One time they appeared quite close to our boat. WOW!! A bit expensive but certainly worth it for one time. Difficult geting pictures but we did get a few keepers. After seeing the whales we landed at Contadora Island for great lunch and some beach time. Should mention that our guide Luis was great.
