“Beautiful Hotel- Great Experience!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 January 2014

My family and I spent half of our trip to Panama at this hotel and LOVED it! The location is fantastic, and it's easy to get cabs to wherever you need to go. The rooms were absolutely beautiful and spotless. Each room has a balcony that looks out at the canal, and you are located right on the beach ... HOWEVER, the beaches are often closed because of pollution from the ships waiting to transit the canal. Thankfully, the hotel has a few really nice pools, so there no shortage of places to swim. The restaurants at this hotel are just OK. I wasn't overly impressed for the price. I would absolutely recommend this hotel, however, because of the quality of the service and rooms.

There are some great things about this hotel, but also some things that aren't so great. On the good side, the hotel is quite luxurious, and the rooms are clean, fresh and well-appointed. The pools and deck area are beautiful, and we never had a problem finding deck chairs with sun and shade. The food at the various restaurants was generally quite good (though not poolside), and there are always plenty of hotel staff around to help out when needed. But the big problem here is the service. We didn't mind that almost none of the staff spoke any English (though that is somewhat puzzling for a hotel which ostensibly caters to North American guests); what we did mind is that most of the staff had no real idea of what they were doing. It wasn't that they didn't try, it was more that they seemed to have no real sense of what guests were expecting from them. Ordering meals was always an adventure, and it was rare that the right food came out in the right order. The concierge seemed incapable of making even simple reservations (though he did wake us up at 7:00 am one morning to ask us about a tour we had never booked), and one time we waited 20 minutes for the bellman to find our car keys (he had the car, just not the keys). Sometimes the restaurants charged us for breakfast and other days it was free. Ditto for drinks at the pool. In general, most interactions with staff were frustrating. Aside from the service, the other big disappointment was the beach, which is pretty mediocre. So in the end, I would summarize it this way: if you are looking for a base from which you can easily explore Panama City, are content to focus on the pool rather than the beach, and if you don't get frustrated with random service, then you will like this hotel. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a beach vacation with a nice beach and typical Westin service, the hotel will surely disappoint.

This place was very nice. I came here with my family (two adults, two children) and we had a very nice time. The location is really beautiful, especially for the view of the sea just in front. The sea itself has relatively "rusty" sand since is full of seashells which makes it very nice to look at (but a bit difficult to walk in), same for the beach. I liked it, though.

The room was nice, beautiful view of the ocean and it has a small terrace (useless during the morning but nice to sit down in the afternoon and evening). Internet worked everywhere properly (though this time I didn't use much internet).

The place has a bunch of pools, and the kids' pool is really big so children are very happy there. The others are progressively quieter (the ones more distant from the main venue and childrens' pool are "relaxing"). It also has a kids' club where you can leave the children for a while, but staff need some more enthusiasm and they should follow the agenda that is posted everywhere (out of 5 things that the agenda said they would do in one day, they maybe did two or three, and basically they would just draw and sing, but never the more ellaborate stuff that they were supposed to be doing). In summary, our children went twice and didn't want to go there again because they knew it would be boring... that should improve.

Food was relatively good but pretty expensive, and the fact that the hotel is actually on a place by its own basically forces you to eat there (or take a 25 USD - 30 min cab ride to the city!). Anyway, it has various restaurants to choose from and a very big buffet so it should be fine if you're not worried about spending too much money.

One thing that I think should improve overall is staff's interest in customers. It seems Panama is not the place to go for good service in general, but I think the Westin should work on improving it despite being pretty difficult. Out of 50 staff, maybe 15 were kind and attentive, all the rest were just either bored of doing their job or just not nice at all. --- now that we came to another hotel in the city center, I think this attitude is not exclusive to the Westin but to Panama in general...

15 minute drive to Panama City proper- definitely rent a car and take advantage! We drove in every night for dinner.

Service is fantastic - Ruthie in the hospitality suite is a gem. Included breakfast and Internet for SPG members.

Gorgeous, new, clean rooms. Beautiful views of the ocean. Lovely clientele.

If you're between here or the intercontinental, this is the way to go. One complaint was the spa- services were expensive and the sauna/steam room facilities were broken. $20 for 1.5 hours to use the spa is excessive - especially considering it was broken. Most hotels allow guests using the gym to use this complimentary.

Room Tip: Great for SPG members - upgrades! Choose a room on a high floor facing the ocean.

The best part of the visit was Ms. Bertha, the receptionist at Sensory Spa, who was very sweet and accommodating. Javier and Andrea were our masseuse and they didn't even ask us where we would like them to focus. Javier moved too quickly and Andrea didn't even provide the aromatherapy at the beginning of the session. I left better than how I came in hence why I'm giving it an average score.

Overall we were very pleased with our six day stay at the Westin. It didn't start off that way. Our first night we were directed to The Star Grill for the buffet. The staff was slow and began removing food before we could finish dining because it was the end of the eveing.

Our rooms were very clean, the other restaurants and bar were great. The pool waitress even purchased a round of drinks for us. The gym was the typical hotel gym but it was spacious and very clean.

The front desk staff and bellhops were very nice and most of them spoke English.
I am looking forward to my next stay at Playa Bonita Westin.
