“If sleep isn't a priority... Amazing boutique hotel!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 March 2013 via mobile

Don't expect to have a full night's restful sleep. We stayed Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights. We loved the layout, the modern decor of the common spaces, the spacious rooms and absolutely unique fun paintings (including the crown painted on the wall behind the bathroom door so that when staring in the bathroom mirror you felt like royalty)! The hotel restaurant was delicious too! They included breakfast means ordering anything off the menu (its all so savory) and during supper we payed for absolutely delicious tapas.

This boutique hotel has a lot going for it EXCEPT it does not offer a restful night's sleep.

We knew it had a roof top bar on the fourth-floor and were excited for it! Given the decor of the rest of the hotel, we expected it to be a chic setting offering a classy environment with an amazing vista of the entire Casco Vieja and the skyscrapers of downtown. We didn't anticipate a full-out night club. Sleepless night #1.

Our room was on the third floor and our ceiling served as a sub-woofer shaking the walls and bed until 4 am Saturday night/Sunday morning. We had been travelling since early the day before, from Costa Rica, and had a full-day planned for our first day in Panama.

When I raised my concerns to the front house staff they made comments about the rooms being tested for decibel levels, the windows being double-panned, and the fact that the website clearly shows the rooftop patio at night. I responded that I couldn't hear my television at full volume, the noise wasn't coming from the street and the website picture didn't show the rooftop full of intoxicated twenty-something's dancing.

On Sunday night we ate at the restaurant and then went to the roof top patio; taking a "if you can't beat them, join them" kinda approach. We enjoyed ourselves and settled in for the night around 11 pm, exhausted from our busy day and lack of rest the night before. Shortly after that's when it started. The neighboring apartments, in an act of retaliation, started blasting their music from their balcony with a large speaker perched and aimed towards our building. This went on for several hours accompanied by them yelling and screaming to people on the street. Sleepless night #2.

Finally, Monday night we had a restful sleep after midnight when the lobby bar/restaurant shut down. Unfortunately, we had an early morning commute to the airport and 6 am came all too soon.

Ear plugs should be considered mandatory. This stylishly chic boutique hotel has a lot of great stuff going for it and if we're to make a clear cut from trying to be a night club, it would easily be a 4.5-star stay in my books!

Very nice mod and hip newer hotel in the historic district of Panama City. Rooms and large and so is shower, decorated in a whimsical but very sophisticated style complete with bar area and gigantic bed with the fluffiest pillows and comforter. Roof bar is the best place to be at night with amazing views overlooking the city, groovy music, friendly bartenders and a laid back crowd of artists and not the typical tourist. You can eat up on the roof before 8 or downstairs afterwards, little plates of lots of delicious food. Downstairs, in the lobby, also a bar and a living wall and little cocktail tables made out of valises. Sharp murals on the walls and very, very cool bathrooms in which the streamline sink is shared between the men's and ladies' rooms. Everyone is attendance is friendly and helpful. Great central location in the old city, the only place I wanted to explore in this overreaching, overcrowded city. Casco Viejo is on the cusp with renovations in progress all around and still some authentic neighborhoods where real folk live. Kind of like the old Soho...but much older. Don't be scared away by Rock and roll reviews. Not a noisy young crowd-- more the hipster lounge set. I'm 60 and nobody looked at me funny

I ate dinner one night at Tantalo while in Panama City. The restaurant is located in casco viejo and there is a lot of construction. I ate in the main dining room as I forgot they had a rooftop bar
:( The food was great. I had a Thai noodle dish and a beef dish. The food is served tapas style to share. The main dining area is very nice and modern with plenty of seating. I would come here again if I'm in Panama City.

The Tantelo is a wonderful respite in the heart of Old Panama city. This renovated building is shades of what is to come with the revival of old town. The rooms are artistically decorated and spotless and the breakfast is fabulous and comes with the room rate. A bit of weekend noise from the vibrant rooftop bar but it's worth a visit. Rita at the front desk is one of the best ambassadors that we came across in Panama and she truly made our stay special.

Room Tip: A lower floor will have less noise from the popular rooftop bar

We spent last Friday night (Feb 15th, 2013) at Tantalo Hotel. When we arrived in the afternoon everything looked fine. The room was modern and well decorated. We were tired from our journey that started that morning in Cartagena, Colombia and after dinner we decided to go to bed at 10:30pm. Well, we were trapped like in "The pit and the Pendulum" (The Classic horror tale by Edgar Allan Poe). Our room (number 12) was on the 3rd floor. The door was adjacent to the central patio overlooking the restaurant on the ground floor (THE PIT) where there was music playing at full volume (and a Tango dancing contest). We could hear the music as if it were right inside our room. After calling the manager and reminded him that we had ask for a QUIET ROOM when we did our booking, he told us that the Hotel was noisy on a Friday night and each room received a share of the noise. After bitterly complaining, he told us that the restaurant music would finish close to midnight. At about 11pm, the music at the roof bar, just one floor above us started (THE PENDULUM). This was even worse, since it was dance music with a bass beat: bum, bum, bum...It was absolutely impossible to try to sleep. After complaining, the Hotel staff told us that their Hotel was FAMOUS for their roof bar and that the music would continue until 3am! They finally agreed to move us to one free room opposite to the one we had (number 8), where the music from the roof bar was still present but not so loud. I personally was not able to sleep until the music finished at 3am and had to wake up at 6am because I had an early flight. So I ended up paying for a torture and a 3 hour sleep period almost 200 US$. If you want to party until 3am without sleeping and can afford to sleep late, you may enjoy TANTALO, otherwise this Hotel is a NIGHTMARE for anyone looking for a decent night sleep. The Casco Viejo is undergoing major renovations, as a result there are several closed streets and a lot of traffic, it is not a good place to stay in Panama City until the works are finished.

Room Tip: This is a small hotel, there are no quiet rooms, some are sightly better than others

A wonderful base for exploring Casco Viejo...trendy, hospitable and comfortable. The entire staff (and Larissa and Rita at the front desk especially!) are friendly, knowledgeable, gracious and anxious to assist in all aspects of your stay. Recommendations, reservations, bookings...all handled with ease and efficiency. Highly recommend!

We loved this spot - very trendy and hip, but comfortable and in the heart of Casco Viejo. Walking distance to everything you'd want to do in the old district. The food is great, the service is wonderful - a top-notch staff is the icing on the cake. A gem of a boutique hotel! The rooftop bar is the best spot to take in the sunset. We'll be back, definitely!

Room Tip: Casco Viejo is pretty noisy right now - lots of construction. We had the 'Love-Ouch' room wh...
