We had somewhat low expectations of seeing monkeys and other critters, based on other reviews but we saw lots of cool animals/reptiles!

We were in a small boat, with a total of three guests, a tour guide, the tour guide we hired to drive us to Gatun Lake, and the boat driver. They guides and the driver know their stuff! They knew exactly where to stop to see critters, knew how to find them/call for them, and knew all about their habits etc. They also had the history of the Panama Canal and the Lake down!

We saw two different types of monkeys, some turtles, crocodiles, and song birds. The tour we went on did not allow us to feed the monkeys, but that was totally fine by me. Another tour, with a shady looking guide, was handing out mango to the monkeys. We were able to watch their interactions and grab some close up photos.

The tour was shorter than I expected, but I think it was because the water level was so low. Had there been more water I think we would have gone in to find sloths and other critters. I had a great time and highly recommend this visit!

Otherwise forget it. One or two monkeys come down to boat to take banana slices. Many boats visit so later in day monkeys not very interested. If you must go, take a boat with few people

We took 2 small boats over to Monkey Island as part of a Caravan Tour of Panama. It was quite a ways to go, but very enjoyable, as the weather was beautiful. We saw several monkeys high up in the trees, they were very active. I wish I had had binoculars, but then we pulled up to the island and saw several up close and personal. One even crawled on the top of one of the boats. They were Capuchin Monkeys. Great Fun.

This is a fantastic tour that brings you into a working research facility on an island that was created when the canal work created Lake Gatun. We started by boarding the boat which brings the researchers and workers to the island from Gamboa. During the trip across Lake Gatun we passed container ships traversing the canal and overheard scientist discussing their projects.

We joined by one other couple for our tour. Our guide, Marcos, was extremely knowledgable about the island and the flora and fauna within. We saw many birds, howler monkeys, agouti, lizards, spiders and different kinds of ants! Lunch was simple and filling and we saw two presentations bout the facility and the work that happens there.

I would definitely recommend for anyone interested in knowing more about the plants and animals found in the Panamanian rainforest.

2014: Monkey Island has ceased to exist in the way it was when I first visited it in 2008. Rather, the tour is now about Gatun Lake. There are still many islands with a variety of animal wildlife that is very interesting. Some of the islands have different monkeys. On a recent trip, the tour guide informed us that the troupe of monkeys of the advertised monkey island were able to escape. This is why they cannot advertise the tour as Monkey Island anymore.
All said and done, it still is a great tour. Pricey, I mean it is priced for tourists. The average salary in Panama is about $30, so most locals cannot afford this trip. We were able to interact with the wildlife, take pictures on the water with the cargo ships in the background, and enjoy a lovely time on the lake.
