“5* classic style at an affordable price”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2014

Panama City is en par with North American prices, and can be extremely expensive if you really want to splurge: you've got the Hard Rock, the InterContinental, the Hilton - every high-end place your credit card knows and hates. The DeVille is the best kind of alternative, and a truly wonderful place to spend your money. It's the kind of place you can imagine James Bond waltzing into, with its mahogany/teak decor, beautifully stylish antique furnishings, and casino-fresh modern outfittings. There's very little bad to be said; if at all. It's style, class, and sophistication - but not at the expensive of your comparative Western fortune.

The location is unbeatable: right underneath one of the city's most recognisable landmarks (the black skyscraper, Tower Bank), opposite Balboa Bank, with an ATM at the door. Right round the corner are the World Trade Center, hospital, and New York Plaza - anywhere in the city is minutes away. The lobby is straight out of a movie, with a modern mid-range restaurant (Alkimia) embedded inside. The staff are highly professional (to a fault), almost-fluent in English, very personable, and have a concierge-style approach to everything. Taxis are easily booked, there's friendly travel advice whenever you need it, a small business office for printing etc, and very fast, reliable wifi. This is a business-centric boutique hotel that's aiming to be the classiest joint in town - and is succeeding, short of a few butlers at the door.

A special mention needs to go to Angel, the 21-year old Colombian reception manager, who was extraordinarily professional and personable to us. He's really going to go far. I watched another staff member go out of his way to help an elderly couple get minor hospital treatment with real, genuine care.

The rooms are outrageously great value - obviously immaculately clean, spacious suites with living room furniture, plasma, mini-bar/coffee machine, dressing gowns, walk-in shower, fantastic lighting, and wonderfully comfortable bedding. Staying here is like a trip to a mini Ritz, with the small, personal edge that gives you the cosy, ambient warmth you need when you're in the middle of skyscraper banking land. As Panama has the best retirement/immigration plan in the world, there appears to be a high proportion of guests that are in the senior citizen range.

You'd probably pay $500/night in the US or Europe for what the DeVille serves up at $90/night. It's beyond a traveller's budget, but if, like me, it's a last-night plunge, you just don't get this kind of thing at this price elsewhere. Likewise if you're on business, this is where you book.

The hotel shuttles are fairly pricey (more expensive than yellow street ones, e.g $35 to Tocumen), and because it's self-enclosed in the financial district, there's no window view to speak of. Those aforementioned street taxis are absolutely notorious for routinely overcharging tourists: local price is apparently $12 to/from Albrook (7km), $25 to/from Tocumen (20km), and $5 to/from the Old City. One couple we heard of was ripped for $60 from Albrook.

DeVille was a truly enjoyable and charming stay, at a very reasonable price - a steal in fact, for what it's offering. You can go with the big glamour, or have something personl and authentic that's punching yards above its weight for a much better price. If anyone i know is heading to Panama on business, it's going to be my first and only suggestion.

If you're coming to Panama for a pure vacation & have limited/no spanish, you will probably mostly enjoy this small hotel.

The rooms are large, clean & all staff speak very good English. The breakfast is more than adequate with a small hot selection, good selection of fruit, cereals & breads. Location is pretty good with lots of restaurants within a 5-10 min walk. Being just off a busy road, it's easy to snag a taxi to negotiate a trip anywhere. There is also public buses to try (Panama is evolving beyond the Rojo Diablo buses of past. I will miss the colourfulness, but not their exhaust).

Our Jr Suite had two windows, one that looked directly into a white wall next door and one that you could see the neighbourhood behind the hotel. Not much noise, could see some sky in the a.m. before heading out for the day.

If this is your first and perhaps only stay in Panama City & if you're here for a week, I'd suggest splitting your stay here for the friendly atmosphere & area restaurants, but also book a few days in one of the hotels by the Bay that will give you an awesome harbor view. (Plaza Paitilla, Decapolis, Hard Rock). They certainly don't have the atmosphere of DeVille, but the views from a higher floor room (less road/horn noise) and great vistas of the boats parking waiting for their turn to enter the canal & people strolling Cinta Costera make for a great photo op (sunsets too).

If you're arriving early evg. feel confident just using the hotels restaurant. It's fairly priced and food is pretty good. Try the Bruchetta appetizer as it comes quick and is quite good.

My issues with this hotel start with their poor website design. I had a bit of business to do in Panama & wanted to enquire about something before arriving. There's no email address to be found, nor any inpage web form to fill out and send off to them. If you want to contact/enquire at the hotel you MUST call them long distance by phone. Totally inadequate in today's age!! So I unfortunately assumed the best and booked the hotel anyways figuring this could be resolved during my stay if an issue. In a nutshell, shame on me. In summary if you need a Panamanian RUC# for tax/business, be careful on booking this place & maybe consider a different place. A website with an ability to communicate before arrival would have gone a long way to my now unresolvable issue. If it's just a vacation in Panama, I'd recommend staying at this place & ignore my issue above.

Tips: Biggest is having an unlocked cell phone. Maps, translation, Tripadvisor website, etc. is golden to have access to everything online.
From Canada, Rogers would charge $70 for limited data/call/txt. You can get a local sim & a big schwack of data for $5. Go to Multiplaza Mall, make your way to the top floor and in the far corner you'll find all 3 local cell companies side by side there (Movistar, +Movil & Digicel). The cell staff will have you up and running in ~30 min.Their prepago packages are all slightly different.

While at Multiplaza, stop at Riba Smith Grocery for your foodie souveniers. Panamanian Coffee (e.g. Bajareque{yellow, not red bag} & Duran), hot sauces (d'Elida & Ajichombo), rum (Abuelo for $7/litre) to name a few. When you leave the mall, best spot to snag a taxi & negotiating a price is by the Forever 21 store exit. There is 'taxi stands' at other doors, but then you have to negotiate only with the first guy in line. Most drop offs seem to be at the Forever 21 door and if you can't get the price, walk away and catch the next inbound taxi to try again. For a more local mall, catch Albrook after checking out the Canal or Casco Viejo.

If you're looking for tradition souveniers/trinkets/tshirts, just make a quick stop at a little gift shop attached at the base of Plaza Paitilla hotel. Most things are there & reasonably priced. A quick pitstop & save valuable sight seeing time.

In walking around Panama City, keep one eye on the ground. The only place with a flat sidewalk in Panama City is Cinta Costera.
Unless you drive in NYC, I'd suggest taking a taxi. Cheap (if negotiated) & plentiful and a lot less stressful than driving your own car. If you must drive, use the insurance option. Most Credit Cards that offer rental insurance are not valid outside North America.

Room Tip: Room facing front won't have a wall view.

We have just spent 3 nights at the De Ville and certainly enjoyed the experience. The room was spacious and clean and the super king sized bed was very comfortable indeed. The room was very quiet, despite being opposite the lifts.
The room would have been more comfortable with brighter artificial lighting since both windows looked out on a blank wall some 5 feet away. The bathroom was spacious, hanging space good and there was an excellent shower - walk in, good pressure and hot water.
A $6 taxi ride will get you to the old town, which is worth a visit, but it is certainly too noisy for us to consider staying there. The trip down the Panama Canal is well worth taking, however the Pipeline tour was a little disappointing
The hotel restaurant is worth using, good value and excellent steaks, but, if you have time, try the Sukhi Thai and Beihrut, both of which are only a few steps away
If we return we would certainly come back to the De Ville

My sister and we are seasoned travelers, we stayed there in two separate rooms for seven nights in mid-January. We found this hotel offers the best value because the room was clean, spacious with a sitting area; and the friendly staff was eager to accommodate all of our requests! We love Lenis at the front desk who has a good command of the English language, was always courteous and patient in giving us sight-seeing advice! Also, the breakfast was well presented with lots of fruit, juices, and some warm dishes; and the servers were very friendly, even though we spoke very little Spanish. DeVille is centrally located around many good restaurants/banks/markets within walking distance. We highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a decent, no frill quiet place to rest at night.

Room Tip: Request for a quiet room, they will comply, avoid #330 which is smaller than other rooms.

We had been on a tour of Panama and were looking for a small boutique hotel in the city after the tour ended. We stayed here two nights in a junior suite. Lovely large and very clean room with a sitting area, a very comfortable bed and a nice bathroom. Breakfast was very nice with a good selection and a pleasant and attentive wait staff. The front desk staff at the hotel were fantastic...helpful and prepared to get whatever you needed. We definitely recommend this hotel and would stay here again.

We were looking for something nice after four nights on a sailboat and chose this property. We reserved a junior suite and found it quite nice. The bed was huge after sleeping in a v-berth and the bathroom was bigger than in my house. There was a couch and sitting area and work desk. It was a lovely room for unwinding.

Only thing that I would change about the room would be to add a tub rather than the large walk in shower, which seemed inconsistent with the traditional suite theme.

The check-in was smooth and staff seemed ready to help when asked. We had them set up a taxi that went well. The breakfast was unremarkable but prompt and efficient. I just had some tea, fruit and cereal. There was also eggs and some other choices but we were in a hurry and I did not spend much time looking.

The area around the hotel was confusing to me. We made it easily to the waterfront and walked along the shore while people jogged, biked, rollerbladed and more. It was sunset and it seemed to be teaming with young adults getting in a workout. A great scene. Getting back to the hotel was a little harder, the street pattern made no sense to me and we ended up walking a lot. Could have just hailed a taxi though as they are everywhere and tap there horn to see if you are looking for a ride.

Overall, I thought the Deville had lots of character and was at a scale that I appreciated compared to the skyscrapers that are dominating the skyline these days. I would stay there again.

We spent one night at the Hotel Deville in early December. After a hectic flight, (flights canceled on American due to ice in Dallas, so new flights on United with extremely short layovers) we wanted a quiet, clean and comfortable place to rest for the evening and spend half of the following day. The Deville delivered!!!
Upon arrival the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The lobby is beautiful and very relaxing and inviting. We were taken to our room, Junior Suite, top floor, down the hall to the right when getting off the elevator. Second room from the end on the left. I can't remember the number. (31 maybe???) It had a bit of a view of the front and of the city, over the roof of the neighboring building. No Problem:) Everything was clean and as expected. The bed was heavenly and we slept better than I can ever remember in a hotel. It was a Saturday evening and the area was very quiet. I am a light sleeper and did not hear any noise.
The TV worked well as did the hair dryer and the shower, with plenty of hot water.
We ate dinner in the on site restaurant, which was alright. The service was a bit slow and the food just OK. Nothing special, but not bad either.
We ate at the included buffet in the morning and there was plenty to eat. Not a lot to choose from, but hey, who needs a huge variety. There was sausage and eggs, and many pastries and fruit and juices. You can fill your plate as many times as you like to be sure you get full.
I used the business center to print our airline tickets for our flight that day and it was very efficient and fast. I do not know about WiFi in the room, as I did not use it. My cell phone did not work the entire time I was in Panama, so can't rate that. I guess Verizon does not have permission to use the towers in Panama, or something. Nothing on it worked, and I travel a lot so do know how to set it so it works in foreign countries.
The following morning we walked around the city. The Hotel is in the middle of the financial district surrounded by high rises. You are close enough to walk out to the ocean or walk around the financial district. We found it very interesting. We then hung out in the lobby for about 45 minutes until our driver arrived to take us to Albrook Airport. By the way, anyone needing an excellent driver while in Panama City, Francisco Stanley (f_stanley1@hotmail.com) is the answer. Very knowledgeable, speaks excellent English and several other languages and will take you anywhere you want to go at a reasonable price!!
On our return to Panama City we opted to stay in Casco Viejo for 3 nights and got no sleep. It is party central, all night long!!! Wish we had stayed at the Hotel Deville again and just had our driver take us to Casco Veijo for an afternoon visit.
If we ever return I would definitely stay at the Deville again.
