“The old city of Panama”

Old Panama city is presently going thru massive restoration. Sure upon completion the city will be spectacular. The archeological structures are magnificent and one only needs to imagine the beauty.

“Fun, Interesting, Upincoming”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2014

This is a very bizarre place.

It is very pretty, but it's a mixed place. Some buildings are beautiful, restored, and great to look at. Others are still in process, covered in construction crews and scaffolding. Others yet are basically condemned.

The restaurants and bars are the real draw here. They're all very good, but they're oddly scattered around, so prepare for a lot of walking.

Right now, as you walk around Old Town, you get the sense that this place is going to be a huge tourist attraction some day. Right now, it's still in process. But with the colonial architecture, great colors, and fun bars, this is a pretty cool place.

“Cultural Gem in Panama City”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

Historic District of Panama is known by many different names from Old Quarter to Casco Antiguo or Casco Viejo to San Felipe. Which is accurate? Perhaps they all are as each title holds a similar meaning describing a historic quarter in the city.

Casco Antiguo was founded in the 1670s after the fall of the original Spanish fort colony, Panama Vieja, fell to pirates. It is well known for its wonderful combination of Spanish Colonial, French and early American architecture. Together with Panama Vieja, the Historic District was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site No. 790 in 1997. This declaration lead to the revitalization of its decrepit and abandoned buildings; both good and bad as its buildings are receiving much needed face-lifts yet the charm of these antiquated edifices is sacrificed to a degree by their new polished exteriors.

I had five days to enjoy and explore these historic streets, tasting local fruit ices and yummy cuisine in bistro style restaurants. I toured the informative museums and bought hand-crafted souvenirs. However, due to the fast and all-encompassing reconstruction efforts of Casco Viejo, the architecture I viewed may not be the same as you view.

“Charming to say the least...”

I didn´t expect to see such a charming Old City. Crean, nice bars and restaurants. The arts and crafts sale on the street is worth it. If you enjoy taking pictures, this is the place! very unique scenes.
