My boyfriend and I stayed at this beautiful, romantic and picturesque cabin in the woods of Maine. The owners were extremely kind and available if we had questions. The cabin was very clean, quaint and had everything we needed for hot meals and coffee by the wood stove. There was no electricity, but propane lights and gas stove. No running water, but there was plenty of water there already for drinking and washing. This was one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed. Each morning we woke up to mountains and snow falling. The woodstove and flannel sheets kept us cozy. We had a great snowshoe trek and was provided with plenty of maps and directions on where to go. The cabin decor was exactly what I would want if it were my own. It was the perfect quiet and peaceful getaway we wanted and we can't wait to go back!
I had wanted to get away from the stresses of work and the city life for a while. I wanted no electricity, I wanted nature and I wanted to be active. Moose Mountain Cabin was more than I could have asked for!
We arrived about an hour later than we had planned owning to city traffic but were warmly greeted by Brenda, her husband, and their beautiful dog. They invited us into their gorgeous yet GREEN home and we talked for a bit and they made sure we knew how to build our own fire and light the gas lamps (sooooo coooool!) They told us about all of the trails nearby and what animals we may be able to see (they provided ample activities to do, where to go if we wanted to sit down and eat, if we needed a store, etc).
We finally headed to the cabin and got all of our stuff in. The wood stove was going for us when we arrived. We quickly lit the gas lamps and made dinner on the gas stove (where we made most of our meals as well as the grill on the back deck!) There is no running water so we boiled water provided to do our dishes (this was fun!). It was exciting to build our own fire to keep our cute little cabin warm. I say little - but this place had ample space and it is soooo charming. Our first morning there, we woke up to beautiful views of the mountains surrounding us – It was truly a “little piece of heaven.” While there- we went on a few day time hikes to Devil's Den (absolutely beautiful) in the snow and the next day, a shorter hike to see the beaver dams. During the evenings when the sun set – we were toasty warm and were able to read and crochet. Our little Welshie enjoyed being snuggled up to the wood stove and was able to partake in all of the day’s activities.
The morning of our last day, we unfortunately locked our keys in our car. Brenda and her husband were super sweet and helpful to give us a phone number we needed and came over on their non-traditional four-wheeler to see if there was anything they could do to help. They hung out with us and chatted for a bit and said we were more than welcome to hang tight by the wood stove in the cabin as no one was coming after us. Their sweet offer was helpful while we waited for someone to come unlock the door. They were there in a jiffy and we were warmed up enough to head out on our last short trek before heading back to the big city.
If I could move into the cabin, I would – if you are considering this cute little cabin, you can’t go wrong!
If you plan to book in the winter – make sure you have all wheel or 4WD as they are back roads and with mud and snow, you could get stuck! Also – it’s helpful to have a sense of direction and you know how to keep a fire going!
Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Stickney for the amazing weekend and being the sweet people you are! You will be seeing us again! :)
This was our first visit to Moose Mountain and we highly recommend visiting! The cabin was very cozy and had everything you could possibly need. The wood stove kept us nice and warm and the added bonus of having a shower and a decomposing toilet made it feel like luxorious camping too. The view is spectacular! The foliage was so beautiful, we spent many hours admoring it from the deck and hammock. We couldn't help but to just relax and unwind during our stay. It's amazing how relaxing being off the grid and in the middle of the woods truly is. There's plenty of things to do nearby if you'd like too. We spent many hours by the outdoor firepit, and during the later hours inside playing board games. Brenda seems so wonderful and was very accommodating to our needs. Highly recommended!! We'll definitely be returning!
My buddy and I are both hard working professionals, and often the demands of the job leaves you worn out and in need of rejuvenating. We found just that in Moose Mountain cabin, The location is priceless. Four miles into the wilderness on a Jeep road. The cabin is fantastic, with all the amenities for comfortable "roughing it", including a deck with a billion dollar view, an outdoor grill, a fire pit and access to hiking trails, We spent time just relaxing and hiking on the AT(Appalachian Trail) nearby. All in all this place was just what we sought and more.
