Based upon TripAdvisor reviews, spent a night while in town visiting a local college with my son. The location is convenient to schools but it's on a noisy intersection. If I slept with the window closed I wouldn't have noticed the street noise, but I prefer fresh air. The breakfast is excellent. Friendly staff. Will go back.

Last minute trip for the funeral of my beloved Aunt Betty Yaffe. Marie booked the last room available for us and catered to our every need. All of the staff is so welcoming and helpful. We will continue to visit family in Amherst and look forward to future stays at the Black Walnut.

We had a wonderful stay at the Black Walnut Inn. We chose the Black Walnut Inn because of the excellent reviews on TripAdvisor and indeed, the reviews are most accurate. We stayed in the Carhart Room (highly recommended!) - a huge, king suite with a gas stove, and original posts/beams. The room was quiet and the bed was very comfortable -- one of the best night's sleep we've had while travelling. The bathroom is clean and wonderfully equipped with nice, fluffy towels. The breakfast was also excellent and included a nice array of homemade jams. Marie provided stellar hospitality and even said she would make a note about being gluten-free so that when we return, she will have gluten-free muffins. We hope we will return. The Black Walnut Inn is a lovely location for exploring Amherst and the surrounding area. A gem!

Room Tip: We highly recommend the Carhart Room (Room #8)

Yes, the other reviews are right: this place is pleasant, it's clean, friendly, detail oriented re: room amenities while not going overboard. Very good place for a solo traveler or a small group. Good breakfast with a number of choices. I strongly recommend this as a true b&b experience compared to my stay at Emily's Place in Amherst...although that place is good for what it is...more of a short stay apartment experience in a rooming house while Black Walnut Inn is the real deal.

And it doesn't go over the top with decor. I avoided one local b&b b/c they seemed so proud of their victorian decor in postings on-line and I prefer a simpler, more modern approach. In any case, you won't go wrong booking a room here.

We enjoyed the comfort of one of the large rooms at this inn. With a king bed, a bath and a half, a gas fireplace and massage tub, this inn provided us with clean, warm comfort.

The breakfast was entirely adequate with a wide menu selection, all cooked to order. Unlike other B&Bs we have stayed at, the Black Walnut serves breakfast between 7 and 10 with a "come when you feel like it" schedule. If you prefer the model where there is a single breakfast sitting with a multi-course meal, you might be disappointed here.

Nonetheless, the BW Inn is a comfortable spot that will enhance the plans of most travelers.

Room Tip: Get room #10 with the king bed!

Four of us stayed here for one night only as we made our way to Cape Cod - shame we didn't stay longer! Two of us stayed in one of the converted stables which was soooo comfortable, whilst the other two stayed in the main house.

Maire was a fabulous host, friendly and welcoming - breakfast was marvelous. She directed us to a lovely restaurent run by her friend Judy. Maire tried to explain to us a dish including popovers - which turned out to be extra, extra large yorkshire puddings!!

Would recommend anyone to stay here, thank you Maire!
