The whole Island is pretty much a protected area. There is scooter hire for getting to places such as The Dales that involves a 30-40 minute walk to a beautiful waterfall. Then there is 4WD /car hire to access some of the beaches that are down rougher roads.
Snorkelling at Flying Fish Cove on the coral reef is amazing with crystal clear waters. There are many walks to choose from - organised or do your own thing. Natural features of the island such as The Blowholes, lookouts and The Grotto coupled with the huge Robber crabs and Boobie birds make this a nature lovers paradise.
Be prepared to pay inflated prices for fresh produce and meals as food is freighted in from Perth and Kuala Lumpur.
The Tourist Center offers internet service, maps, info and souvenirs.
Duty free booze and cigarettes available in the supermarkets and at the airport.

free entry, see the blow hole, waterfall, lookouts, southern tip of island, the island is in the shape of a 'Y' and is 15km from the most furthers points, 4wd needed to visit some places as the roads can be steep and slippery if wet (4wd tracks is very short BUT are more interesting than the many graded dirt roads) (no real 4wd driving experience needed), there are 2 car/4wd hire places on the island, best visit the christmas island tourist info page for map and info before leaving home,

Christmas island pace is slow. It reminds me very much of Malaysia. The people are friendly and everything you want is there. I was visiting family who are currently working there and they showed me around. On first glance it is very industrial as the main focal point of Flying Fish Cove is the Phosphate port. It is quite a sight. There are no typical swimming beaches on the island but plenty of snorkeling and SCUBA diving locations. The bird life is incredible. The Golden Bosun was a highlight. I am not much into bird watching but when the sun catches this birds wings in full flight it really does look like it is made out of gold. I will remember that sight for a long time. The Red Crabs are all over the place as are the Robber crabs. These are mesmerizing to watch. Drive/Walks to waterfalls and through the National Park are amazing. It was particularly dry when I went so not as much greenery as usual although the wet season is about to start. There is actually plenty to do but a week is enough if you include relaxation time. Don't rush anything - no one there does. It has one bank but they are the friendliest bank staff I have ever met and I don't even bank with them. The Golf course is nine holes and operates on an honesty system (you put your money in an envelope in a slot in the door of the clubhouse). Things cost a bit more on the island with regard to eating out owing to freight costs and, I suspect, a bit of profiteering from the amount of government workers there for the immigration centre but it is not so over the top as to be ridiculous. All in all, a friendly place and more for the nature lover than the beach loving resort type person.

Hire a car and travel the island. Watch out for the crabs on the road they can pop tyres. Aside from driving around seeing the birds and the crabs don't forget to go diving. The diving here is the best I've seen, better than the GBR and Guam and Truk/Chuuk.

fishing is second to none
parks are fantastic
diving is world class
adapting to island time was a challenge first time but if you stay for a week you can stay easy for two weeks but it you stay for two weeks you may never leave its that kind of place.
the red crab migration is truly one of the wonders of the world to see.
