“Great location, nice service and breakfast”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 November 2011

I just returned from Skopje, where I spent two nights at the Guesthouse "Anja". It is not a typical hotel, because the rooms are on the third floor of one old building and the dividing walls are so thin that you can hear almost everything happening in the next rooms. The room itself was too small and the air conditioner was not working at all, but this is all I can complain about.

The room was very clean and well-kept. Breakfast was served downstairs at the "Anja" club and it was possible to chose everything from the breakfast menu (very clever solution). The prices of the hotel and at the bar-restaurant were more than acceptable. The location is super, because the views of the rooms are on the Vardar river, while the facility itself is located just a few steps away from the new centre of Skopje. The service guys also are worth a mention, because they were correct, always smiling and asking if we liked the food.

All and all, I had a nice experience at Guesthouse "Anja", so now I now where to stay if I will go to Skopje again.

Room Tip: Room no.3 was a bit small for being a double room. Bathroom was a bit tiny.

I would definetely recommend Anja if you are preferring a central location and budget rooms, but not too comfy because at night, because of the clubs and bars around, you may have a hard time sleeping (if you are especially sleeping near the window, like i did). And there were some issues regarding the thickness of the walls, but other than these the location was perfect and everywhere was so easy to get to by walking; the old city, the new city, shops and Macedonia Square. The staff was very helpful and kind to help us around. Especially Igor helped us around by giving tips and he was a really funny guy. However if you are expecting Anja to be a conventional hotel, you won't be finding one because the hotel is located in a shopping mall kind of place with no one in the reception and the restaurant downstairs keeps the housekeeping of the hotel. If you prefer to go there, just don't climb the stairs rightaway, but ask for someone in the Restaurant Anja and they will help you.
But overall my experience was good. If you are looking for a central location, but not a perfect hotel, I would definetely recommend Anja.

Room Tip: Ask for the bigger rooms, they are the same price but the ones bigger has significant differences th...

This is a small guest house on the second floor above the Anja restaurant. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating, and goes right up to the river's edge. It has an enchanting feel, and the Stone Bridge is visible a few hundred meters away. The city square is also a short walk away, as is the Old City Market area. The Anja and the adjacent buildings are part of a shopping mall, with a grocery store in the basement, and ATM, which makes staying here very convenient.

When you arrive, you will go to the Anja restaurant and let the owner/manager know you have booked a room. They will give you a key and take you to your room - one of only 5. The rooms technically overlook the river, but it is difficult to see, because of the number of trees out front. The owners call it a hostel, and the rooms are definitely on the spartan side, but are clean, and it is definitely worth the low price.

The owners are very welcoming, and gave me a welcome drink and dessert when I arrived (strawberry cheesecake, cappuccino, and a bottle of water were my choice!). For breakfast I was given my choice to eat as much of anything I wanted - full menu!

One thing to note: I stayed on a Friday night, and the numerous bars in the area seemed to all be competing to see who could pump out the loudest thumping music. It was a miracle, but it was not able to be heard inside the room, otherwise it would have been a bad experience. The bed and pillows were fine, and there is adequate closet space, a desk and chair, etc.

From the greeting upon arrival to checkout Guesthouse Anja could not have done any more for us or made our stay in Skopje any better. As Malev (airline) has lost our suitcases we arrived with nothing and they were SO helpful, they even took us to the supermarket so we could buy supplies for the night. The room was clean, spacious, bathroom a good size, we even had dinner in the attached restaurant and the food was delicious and very reasonably priced, overall excellent location for a stay in Skopje.

The location of the guest-house is just perfect. It's located just near the Macedonian Square and the Stone Bridge. Don't expect a hotel. The guest-house does not have a reception or sth. It's located just above the Anja Restaurant, run by the same owner. The waiters in the restaurant also work as the guest-house staff.

The rooms are OK, quite clean. Not that new and not that old. We stayed two times in two different rooms. One of the rooms had a better shower than the other.

You can have the breakfast at the café/restaurant, which is included in the price. The café is quite nice, well decorated, and clean.

It was Igor, one of the waiters, who turned our experience into an extraordinary one. Since he lived 5 years in Turkey, he was speaking Turkish perfectly. And he was extremely friendly and helpful. He did all his best to make our stay comfortable. Many thanks to him. The rest of the staff was OK. So if he was not there, I think I would rate the staff as "average".

The walls of the rooms are quite thin. One of the nights we really had difficulties sleeping because of the noises coming from next room.

The hotel was a little hard to find as it was above their restaurant but the taxi driver helped us with our bags and located a member of staff to help us. The room was clean and comfortable, my only problem with it was that we could hear everything from the neighbouring rooms at night, every conversation, every cough could be heard like it was next to you.

The location if the hotel could not be faulted and the restaurant served good food (better and cheaper than the ones in the main square by the Alexander the Great monument).

The staff were so friendly and the owner kept offering us free drinks, desserts and coffees throughout the day, even when we protested and tried to pay!

Overall I'd highly recommend this hotel (but remember to bring earplugs for the night)! Can't fault the staff or the location, deservedly number one on TripAdvisor.

When you book a room online, especially for a first time stay at location you do not know much about, I guess you hold your breath to find out what you're going to end up with. Same here since we haven't travelled through the Balkan area before, but we just found the hotels on the web including this one in Skopje and took a gamble. When arrived we didn't know what to expect, however this little gem did exceed all our expectations.

Regarding the accommodation, service and location - comfortable, tastefully furnished, bright, perfectly clean and soundproof rooms / zero noise from the very lively street, with a numerous restaurants, bars and cafés; accommodating and knowledgeable staff; downtown location and next to the riverbank (there is a small artificial beach nearby, no swimming though); delicious food in their lovely café restaurant with a huge alfresco area, located just below the rooms; everything from what was recommended for viewing/visiting just steps away, location walkable to absolutely every important site in the town; behind the hotel is the biggest shopping center in city, with enough variety and shops to suite many different tastes.

Although without any knowledge about the country industry standards for hotel category, in my opinion there is a considerable discrepancy. I do wonder why the hotel is officially determined as 2-star category, when it is at least a higher 3-star. Anyhow, it is a great value for money and I highly recommend this little gem for a short or extended stay to anyone visiting Skopje, Macedonia.
