Lovely big rooms , very polite staff, in a quiet(but not that far away from the downtown) part of town.Hotel terrace is looking at the mountain and it's a wonderful place to drink your morning coffee, eat your breakfast and just enjoy .i Was on a trip by car, and it was very helpful that the hotel has private parking. This place is ideal for short business trips either for touristic journеy
Breakfast is continental, but plentiful and tasty. Prices are very low compared with what this hotel offers. In one word peaceful&beautiful.

Room Tip: one bedroom apartment

My boyfriend and i stayed at Portal Hotel for 7 nights. I must say it is a lovely hotel with a great location. Our room was amazing. Huge room, with a big TV, air con, couple of chairs and a table, very comfy king size bed and most important, great view. We overlooked the river Vardar and mountain Vodno. Great way to start your day. At night we didn't even need AC, just opened the window and breeze comes in. Very quiet and peaceful. We walked to the centre of the city every day along the river and it only took us about 20min. Our room was cleaned every day to perfection, new towels and fresh sheets. The bathroom was probably the biggest and cleanest one i've seen. Breakfast was served at any time of the day. That was a big plus cause sometimes we wanted to sleep in, and we knew we won't miss the breakfast we paid for. WiFi was working at all times, never lost a connection.
The staff was very polite and helpful. There was always someone on reception to meet our needs and help us with anything we needed.
I would definitely stay there again and recommend this hotel so anyone that travels to Skopje.

It was our first time to the Macedonian capital, Skopje, and we were naturally quite excited. Things didn’t exactly get off to a great start when it took three airport taxi drivers to work out where the Hotel Portal was… this is not a big city, I thought … but 20 Euros later we arrived.
The hotel was obviously in the city’s industrial area and was not that appealing from the outside … worse was to come when we got inside.
No one helped, or even offered to help us with our baggage and the first words uttered by the receptionist was a request for payment – three nights in fact – and we had yet to see the room.
That payment theme resonated at the end of our stay.
To cut a long story short, our room at the Portal was pretty basic… really, really dark, a foul smell in the bathroom, warm fridge, no coffee/tea making facilities, a tiny TV tucked in a corner a mile away from the seating arrangement, an air con that blew hot air, or… hot air… then more hot air.
And there was hot air aplenty when we decided to stay just the one night and not three. The hotel is a good 45-60 minute walk from the city centre, and, although we like walking, just too far for a short stay.
Everything to see in Skopje is virtually in the city centre.
So, after the most lame breakfast I’ve ever been offered in my life (you had a choice of coffee/tea or juice… you had to pay extra for both) we asked for our passports back.
Oh no came the reply… you have to pay for the three nights before you get your passports.
Hmmm…!!!!
I then informed them that we had decided to check out for all the reasons above, particularly as my wife had suffered a stroke the previous year and was not feeling up another less than inviting in walk in the heat … I didn’t even mention the renovating and hammering going on the floor above us until well after 6pm the previous evening and for most of the morning.
The receptionist said she would have to ring her boss, who then conveniently walked through the door… everything was explained to her, but she then said she would have to ring the BIG BOSS … the answer came back… no passports unless we paid the three nights.
So, you get the picture.
The owner of a third-rate hotel, in the backwaters of Skopje is attempting to blackmail us into paying for three nights when we only stayed one by refusing to hand over our passports.
I played the only card I could… if we don’t get our passports immediately, I will call the police.
We got our passports but the pathetic BIG BOSS said we had to pay for the pathetic breakfast which had been promised free the previous day after we had mentioned problems with the room.
My partner and I could not get outa that place quick enough.
Need I say … do not stay at this hotel.
Some people should not be in the hospitality industry… the owner of this hotel is one.
He/she, his/her hotel and his/her staff are the last things the fledging tourism industry of Macedonia needs…
P.S. This place is definitely NOT a B&B (which, by definition, includes breakfast with the price), so should not be listed in this category.

Room Tip: Just don't stay here.

After reading other reviews on T/A, I was beginning to think there has been some mistake in hotels! Firstly, there are no such rooms with views of mountains and river as have been described. I actually inquired about this before our arrival and have it in writing that all rooms only have garden view...and the so.called "garden" is basically just some trees in the overgrown, unattractive plot next.door.There is, apparently, a view of the very dull-looking river that we just walked along from the terrace, but we haven't seen it and, at the moment (after 7pm) there is a lot of banging, like hammering, coming from above, despite my husband's indications to Reception that the noise was disturbing us. The room itself is clean (as is normal in this part of the world...no biggie), there seems to be hot water and the WiFi works well, so far. The aircon is difficult to adjust (no remote found and just seems to be blowing hot air), plus the heating came on when we didn't want it so we had to unplug it as there was noone to be found at Reception to ask for help. There is a small, flat.screen tv that has cable, but mostly just news channels, if you want English anything. There is a mini-fridge, but no mini-bar ( you can get drinks at reasonable prices from Reception - no restaurant as such) The location is okay IF you don't mind being in the middle of car-yards and well away (my pedometer worked it as just under 4km) from the centre of town (btw, it's not a scenic walk in any way and not nice in the heat). In addition, taxi drivers have difficulty finding the place. Management has offered to throw in breakfast for us because we weren't delighted with the room (although they wanted us to pay in advance before we'd even seen it)...yay for them...but we're looking elsewhere for our remaining time in Skopje. We've looked around in the centre and found heaps of options that seem to be better value. At the moment, there doesn't seem to be a real need to avoid the centre as Skopje is a relatively small, laid-back city, for a capital and, frankly, there doesn't seem to be very much in the way of sights, shops, restaurants or markets around here.Disappointed.

Room Tip: Check around the centre first. It 's not a busy city.

A couple of clarifications : first this is not a B&B nor an apartment, it is a genuine hotel with big rooms, 24 hours service and a guest service desk ; second it is not to be confused with Hotel Porta which is much closer to city center and third , contrary to what was written on their web site, the room is not anymore equipped with a kitchenette but free breakfast (a plentiful one ) is offered for the same price.
The room we had was HUGE. The main bedroom had a King Size bed, a sofa, a chair, a table, a fridge, a TV and ample space to walk around . There was a second bedroom with a normal bed and we used it to store our luggage since it had also a closet. The bathroom was a bit small but it had a closed shower to avoid spreading water all over. The room was very clean and tidy and towels were changed on a daily basis.
The hotel is located at the edge of Skopje in an area bordering the river and in the middle of car dealerships. It is not on a main street but on a lateral street which makes it difficult to find for taxi drivers ; the good side is that it is very quiet, specially at night .
Taxis are very cheap in Skopje. It costed us between 150 to 200 dinars to get to the City Center and never took more than 20 minutes. The hotel is only an 8 minutes walk to the Aleksandar Palace where the Skopje City Tour bus starts its run at 10h30 in the morning. We used it twice since it got us a full guided tour of the city for 35 dinars and left us at the Gate
For the price ,it was an excellent value !

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the first floor, close to the service desk

After a 16 hour bus trip we arrived at Hotel Portal very late at night. The wonderful staff were there awaiting our arrival. The staff were always smiling and so friendly and helpful. There were over 30 of us and they took care of all of our needs (including helping me book a car and a hotel in another town). The rooms are all large and unique. Our bathroom was the biggest I had seen anywhere in Europe!
The location is great...with a view of the river and a cross on the hill that is lit at night.
I would recommend this anyone!
