Mustafa Pasha`s mosque is one of the most beautiful buildings of Islamic religious architecture in Skopje. Located on a hillside opposite of Fort Kale, this mosque dominates the whole surrounding and can be seen from every part of the town center.

It was built in the last decade of the 15th century when Macedonia was part of the Ottoman Empire. It is an endowment of Mustafa Pasha, a high ranking official in the Ottoman state. Above the entrance door to the mosque there is an inscription in Arabic dating from about the time when the mosque was built.

By the right front corner of the main cube stands a minaret which gives a vertical accent to the whole building Its upper part is a projecting balcony from which the muezzin calls the faithful to prayer. The minaret is about 47 meters high and its spiral staircase has 138 steps.

On the outer east side of the mosque is Mustafa Pasha`s mausoleum. It is a closed type hexagonal mausoleum with a dome identically to that of the mosque. On the outer south part of the mosque there is a sarcophagus, which is suppose to be the grave of Umi, one of Mustafa Pasha`s daughters. For more: http://bit.ly/EHM-Mustafa_Pasha_Mosque

Was closed when we passed by, but when local watchman (I guess) observed us, he immediately offered to let us in. Thanks to him we had the possibility to enjoy this nice mosque. Impression was that it is quite special and historical place with several artifacts displayed to public.

Mustang a Pasha mosque, in term of size, is not all that great. But there is a spiritual air to it. The location is very pretty with the Kale fort on one side and the mountains on the other. Besides it is a nice gateway for entering the old bazaar area. For nice pictures of the monument I will recommend crossing to the other side of the road in front of the mosque and climbing the retainer wall - you will be able to capture the monument in its full glory.

Built in 1492, it is the most important religious monument in Macedonia from the time of the Ottoman Empire. It overlooks the old bazaar and is virtually next to the Kale Fortress. It is open, even during the evening, and has simple, but beautiful decorations inside. Mustafa Pasha, who died in 1519, is buried in the six sided mausoleum on the north side. It is a peaceful getaway after lunch or dinner from the bustling bazaar and on the way to the fortress. It is a nice diversion from the ostentatious, gaudy statues of Alex and Phil that dominate the main square.
