“Political Disneyland”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2014

This totally over the top redevelopment of the old square and surrounding area is meant to be an expression of nationalism but just comes off looking like a desperate attempt to mild the national culture to reflect a pastiche of classical era macedonia.
Politics aside the fountain is so OTT as to be fun and my toddler liked it. some nice cafes around the southern edge of the square or along the river bank to the north eastern of it.

“Impressive”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2014

Actually, Skopje seems to be build around this humongous, oversize square. Giant sculptures of already oversize historical figures. Lots of cafes, restaurants and nightlife options. Government buildings are magnificent and huge. If you close your eyes you would think that you are in Vienna or Berlin. No beggars, very safe to walk at nights (by the way, don't miss out the light shows at nights) and extremely clean.

“NICE BUT A LITTLE BIT COLD”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 May 2014

It's near to Vardar River ( and Stone Bridge ) and Turkish Bazaar and includes so many statues ( such great one of Great Alexander ). However, there are so many constructions near the Square and the ambiance is a little bit cold.

“Mussolini meets Las Vegas- Unbelievable Neo-Fascist Kitsch”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

Absolutely bizarre in every way. Kitsch is the only possible adjective for the ludicrous Skopje 2014 nationist building programme with a whole city full covered with fibre glass columns, statues and marble fountains. Half billion Euros - possibly more spent on this in a poor country - possible only when the government controls all the main media. However it is both hideous (and somewhat creepy) and hugely entertaining, so I'm not whether to give it one star or five, I vote the former for the people of Macedonia, the latter for the visiting tourist who likes fun things.

“Skopje starts here”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 May 2014

It seems everthing starts at this Square. There are two Shopping Centres in or close to the Square. Cafes and Restaurants on all corners, and prices are reasonable.
