“eastern block classic”
Reviewed 18 October 2009

It was my second stay in Skopje but my first at the Continental, The first time I stayed at the Ambassador in the center, 50€ "special price" and it was a ripoff.
The continental is outside the city center, on the way to the airport, 20' walk or 5' by taxi. there are always taxis outside and everywhere you go costs around 60 denars (1€). Taxi drivers don't usually overcharge, they have meters and will give you a receipt.
ok, the hotel: the hotel is a classic, but you have to bear in mind where you are and what to expect or demand.
If you are looking for a full western/american/sterilized experience, go to the Big western or the Holiday inn, they are really close to McDonald's too so you'll feel at home all the way.

The Continental keeps that soviet mystique, the big foyer, the mirror walls, an amazing single piece concrete staircase, the bar.. the amazing bar with the glass works and glass chandeliers dripping from the ceiling, surrounded by these massive black leather sofas placed around small tables. Black wooden wall with lamps here and there, white stone floors and massive windows on the sides give this lounge an incredible atmosphere.

Breakfast is plain but eficient (eggs, self-toast-toast, cereals, coffee, juice and so on), if you're lavishing for those 32 types of fruit breakfast go to Brazil not Macedonia. Waiters are friendly and helpful.
The rooms are plain, big windows that actually open, some signs of age specially in the toilet, air conditioned, but overall comfortable. How much time do you spend in your bedroom anyway?
Front desk service is "bureaucratic", I read in a previous review, yes it is, but no more than in any other hotel. Apart from that they were amazingly helpful and friendly.

Other things, there is free wireless in rooms up until the 4th floor and the bar closes at 10pm, so if you were thinking in having that late night drink before going to bed, have it in town or have them fill the mini bar on your arrival, because there is nothing close that is open late.

Apart from that, loved it. If you go try and go up those concrete stairs from the ground floor to the 1st floor, there you will find an amazing selection of "abandoned" conference rooms and bars, all in that amazing soviet style, full of atmosphere and nostalgia. Sit down, have a cigarette and a drink (bring it from the bar downstairs) and imagine the place 30years ago, when it was probably The hotel in Skopje where people would have meetings and go for business dinners. If you are a sucker for eastern block's details, I'm sure you will love it.

On the plus side the breakfast in this hotel is good. Lots of it and a classic mix of cold meats, eggs, salad, voghurt. The sausages are a little off putting (like very cheap franks) but overall a good breakfast, very nice coffee in particular. However, the rooms vary hugely. Floors 3, 4 and 5 seem to have the nice rooms - 301 is particularly nice. The difference between these rooms and say floor 7, 8 or 9 is HUGE. The upper floors are like army barracks - 3 beds to a room, not proper bed steads, crunchy blankets and dirty and delapidated bathrooms. The bathrooms on floor 3 are nothing to write home about - mine had such worn enamel it was like gravel in the bath and I showered instead every day. The more worn rooms are not very clean. Or perhaps not cleanable. THe better rooms are cleaner and some have fridges. There is no internet access above floor 5 despite the website saying it's on all floors. The wifi is free and the signal is good enough. It's a taxi ride into Skopje from here or a 20 minute walk. The taxi costs 80-120 denars (£1.10 to £2). In town - a lovely lovely restaurant overlooks the main square, with tables outside where you can buy delicious Macedonian dishes and also pizzas etc.

I was really surprised to find out that a hotel that carries 4 stars and costs 110 euros for a double room could be that bad. First of all, everything, every piece of furniture, everything from the lobby, through dining areas, conference rooms, elevators, stairs, room furniture, everything was worn out and overused. The beds were nothing but old, dirty, worn out, uncomfortable mattresses thrown on top of what appeared to have been a bed case 20 years ago. The sheets were small and covered little. Whatever the sheets did not cover, was filthy. The carpeting was filthy as well. It looked like someone attempted to clean the bathroom but it was done very poorly. There was a certain smell in the lobby. Breakfast was so average and under todays standards that one would rather skip it then try eating it. Chairs were covered in some sort of lining that was probably supposed to hide their condition, but that lining was filthy and stained, just like the table clothes. The staff was not unfriendly but not very good either.

I stayed there with my 78 year old father for one night. I wish I hadn't. I wish this stay was not one of the memories that I would have.

I stayed here last month. The service and staff was very helpful and generous. The rooms were pleasant and do have air conditioning, which was nice since the dry heat was terrible outside. The breakfast buffet had everything you could ask for, and was delicious. I would recommend this hotel if you ever visit Skopje.

I had the misfortune of staying in the depressing Hotel Continental on two occasions in late May and early June, 2008. The building is more than a little tired looking. Rugs in the rooms appear to have needed refreshing 25 years ago. Toilets uniformly broken. Air conditioning either non-operable or meager. One traveler in our party spoke of his prescription pain medicine being "liberated" by the housekeeping staff. (Should I continue?)

On top of that, the front desk and restaurant staff all behaved like bureaucrats and not like professionals in the hospitality business.

Location is next to a new highway under construction and is about a 20 minute walk through marginal semi-wasteland areas to downtown. (Fortunately, cabs are cheap.)

If I had had a choice, I would have stayed in the more centrally located and far better-run Holiday Inn.

Stayed here for a week in the spring of 2008. Skopje was experiencing a heat wave - the hottest city in Europe. And in my un-air conditioned room, I believed it. "My air conditioner doesn't work," I told the front desk. "Yes it does, but it might be shut off at certain times during the day," was the inaccurate answer. After a few hours, I inquired again. And again. Plenty of confusion, conflicting answers, finally, "We are renovating the hotel. No air conditioning. Sorry." My room was 29 degrees. At night! Hotter in the day. After continual struggles and inconsistent answers, I finally got an air conditioned room (with an air conditioner that was not subjected to the "renovation"). Otherwise, a cheap-looking, drab, depressing hotel. The breakfast buffet was nothing to write home about, and in general the place sorely needs that "renovation" I was told about. You can do much better in Skopje without spending a lot of money.

I was accommodated in the Continental for 7 hours, courtesy of Swiss airlines, as my flight from Skopje was delayed for technical reasons. The hotel is well-worn and the rooms, although clean, reflect this too. I arrived midway through breakfast which was in the form of a buffet. There was not much to choose from as scores of young visitors, there for various sporting events, had eaten almost everything.
The elevators, there are two that I could see, are tiny and they struggled to cope with the volume of 'traffic'. One of them would only permit one person to enter or exit before the door closed, and it did, unless one of the hotel staff used physical force to hold it open. I was a 'victim', it closed on me with considerable force and I considered this to be very dangerous, a child or elderly person may have been injured.
I would stay here if I had to, but otherwise I would give this hotel a miss.

  • Liked — Nothing really
  • Disliked — The elevator experience
  • Tips/Secrets — There are other hotels to choose from.
