Stone Bridge
Ranked #22 of 71 Hotels in Skopje
Reviewed 14 September 2011

The Stone Bridge Hotel's location is by far the best in Skopje. It is located in the center of town between the old town and the newer more modern part of Skopje. Our room overlooked the Stone Bridge and the fortress.

By western standards, the rooms are indeed tired, the bed was not super comfortable and the covers and pillows were a little thin. The shower was hiliarious - it looked like a state-of-the-art spa shower of the 1980s... but it did the trick. Hotel was clean.

The public spaces were beautiful, the lobby was old-school and quite elegant if you are able to appreciate that you are in Macedonia, where the economy is not anywhere neat that of the Western world.

Overall, it is what it is: clean, a little tired, GREAT location! We stayed for one night on our way back to the airport, and we don't regret our decision!

Room Tip: Ask for a room off hte main strip - it is a little quieter!

Location is tops with regard to this Hotel. It is right on Stone Bridge and a short walk to the right of the hotel is the Old Town Turkish bazaar. I felt the Reception staff could have been slighty more helpful, when i asked for a map of the surrounding area i was told i could purchase one for Euro 3 and that was not much help either, for a 5* one expects at least a photocopied map. Contrary to other reviews i thought our room was small and had no English channel on the TV. The front entrance and outside coffee shop is absolutely lovely as was the diningroom with wonderful views of the bridge, river, city and fort, the breakfast was adequate and enjoyable. I would certainly recommend and stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on floor 4 or 5

Here's a travel trip for last minute hotel reservations in Eastern Europe. Regular travellers to parts of Eastern Europe may know that hotel staff are allowed very little discretion when it comes to negotiating rates. So it was that I had to stay unexpectedly in Macedonia, our car had developed problems and was not going to be able to make it to Kosovo. On my iPhone I did a quick search of available hotels in Skopje. The Stone Bridge Hotel seemed to fit the bill very well. The search engine showed rooms at € 80 per night. I pitched up to reception just to see if they could do any better. "No", I was told. The rate was €138 but they could allow me 20% weekend discount - that's €110. Do you mind if I sit here and book it online. Not at all said the very pleasant chap at reception. He sat me down in air-conditioned comfort (it was 35 degrees outside) straight in front of him and saved myself €30 in about five minutes. Bookings.com probably charged the hotel €10-15 but nobody seemed to be worried - procedures are procedures. Rack rates can be quite inflexible in Eastern Europe.

The hotel itself is superbly located, is comfortable and, at €80, represents reasonable value. The breakfast was good with panoramic views from the 6th floor restaurant over the Stone Bridge, the Castle Makedonia Square and the huge new statue of Alexander the Great that causes the Greeks so much annoyance. Minor negatives: the coffee served at breakfast was vile and the high-tech showers in the bedrooms are probably a bit to fragile for hotel use. But all-in-all a happy experience.

We did not expect much for a hotel in Skopje and the Stone Bridge met our expectations. We opted for the 'diplomatic suite'. For less than 200 euros per night it was an adequate room. Our air-conditioner, door locks, and shower all broke during our stay. However, the staff was friendly and fixed everything ASAP (I think they are used to it). There is no better location in Skopje and I would recommend this hotel.....just don't expect too much....

Generally, the hotel, service and the restaurant are good, but there are details that deducts points. For instance, if you try to book the hotel from the travel agency, it will be more expensive that from booking. I was paying more than one week a higher price, when there are other good hotels and cheaper in the city. After complaining about the price, hotel staff told me to book the room for the next week from booking. besides, the furniture are a bit old for a 5star hotel and the location is good, close to the center, but also close to the stone bridge where albanian children are usually asking for money to foreign people, and sometimes trying to stole.

Considering other hotels I have visited in Post-Yugoslav countries, this is actually not that bad.

I stayed in hotel Stone Bridge for one night in May 2011, and it was, overall a pleasant experience.

Priced at 85 Euros, the room wasn't expensive. The location is as central as it gets in Skopje, which may be an important consideration considering how small the city center is and how run down all other districts are.

The hotel is a modern building surrounded by new constructions in their final stages. With the exception of screaming workers at 8AM, this wasn't bothersome. The hotel has sufficient parking at the entrance.

Service is not perfect, this is a poor post communist country, and it shows. I saw a party heavily debating their room charges in the morning, it seemed that the reception wasn't particularly proactive about trying to settle the debate.

The deco of the hotel and the rooms is just about 5* worthy, certainly better than expected. The rooms are well sized, have a well stocked MiniBar, Kingsize bed and Safe. The only truly negative point was the über-ridiculous pseudo-hightech shower cabin that was too small for me by height (1m92) and completely dysfunctional.
