I can only confirm what others have said. As a lone business traveller ,visiting for a cold, grey, damp week in Skopje, it was exactly what I wanted. Within 2 hours of arrival I was breaking bread with the extended family. This is no ordinary hotel - they simply welcome you into their home. It's basic, clean and comfortable. If you want flashy and impersonal, go find a big chain. Easy enough to find - like most hotels in Skopje they have advertising on nearby lamp-posts that help you find the turning. Slight downhill walk to the city centre, perhaps 15-20 minutes walk. Aside from the hotel hospitality, the nearest (italian/pizza) restaurant is 10 minutes walk, good enough and typical for Skopje.

We had a slight problem finding Villa Vodno, as our GPS didn't recognize the streets of Skopje. But once we did, we felt were in a comfortable oasis in the midst of a somewhat plain and unexciting city. We rate it as the best hotel in Skopje because there doesn't seem to be too much competition, but also because the owner and his family are very friendly and made us feel right at home. The room was comfortable and the breakfast very good.

This was our first trip to Skopje and we loved it. We had just come back from an incredible dance seminar in Struga and loved the Villa Vodno on site. We had been booked into the wrong hotel, Vodno Hotel at first, and when we realized this, we hopped into a taxi and had him drive us to Villa Vodno. There was construction going on (they are adding another story) so we were not sure if they had rooms available. As soon as we arrived, a friendly staff member came out and helped us into the hotel with our bags. Our stay was wonderful...the room was quite large and included a sitting area. The owner of the hotel is very friendly and he treated us to a lovely lunch at the hotel on our last day. It is located in a beautiful part of town, but it only took 15 minutes to walk to the center and 20 minutes to walk to the Stone Bridge and the Old Town.

Previous reviews are totally right. Our experiences at Villa Vodno will be long remembered for wonderful hospitality. A calming place to stay near to but away from the buzz of the city, huge well equipped rooms and a pleasant garden. We didn't eat at single city restaurant in the evening as the ownersl offered to cook for us and invited us to a very international (guests) bbq at the weekend. The owners and his family are lovely and so helpful We were very glad we were staying here rather than the high * hotels in town. Highly recommended and you will no doubt meet some interesting guests over a bottle of wine in the garden! A great find book early. Jane and David

What a find!

I travel on business a lot and this is quite simply the best hotel I've ever stayed in, not because it is big and posh but because it is small spacious and friendly. The location, set at the foot of mount Vodno is breathtaking but you are only a short walk or cheap taxi (less than a euro) into the city centre. Nothing is too much trouble for the owner his wife and son. The rooms are spacious and scrupulously cleaned everyday, everybody is so friendly you feel part of the family. In fact while we were there we were invited to a family barbecue held to celebrate a birthday. We had an excellent time and were made to feel so welcome.

This was our first visit to Skopje, Macedonia and the help and advice we were given by the owner helped us so much and saved us a lot of hassle. If you are travelling on business then this is the hotel for you. That said I was so impressed with Skopje it will not be long before I take the family.

We picked the hotel after reading the comments here but it took a bit of finding. So if you want to contact them I suggest you either search for "Villa Vodno Skopje" on Google [---] don't worry they speak good english.

Also it is worth arranging with the hotel reception for somebody to pick you up from the airport it is cheaper and safer, some of the taxi's we travelled in were a little scary!

I have stayed at the Villa Vodno on three separate occasions. Each time has led to more pleasant discoveries. The Villa Vodno is situated half way up the Vodno hill under the giant cross that dominates the skyline in Skopje. It is an upmarket part of Skopje within walking distance of the city centre or an cheap taxi ride to town.

The rooms are large and the suites have bedroom, study and bathroom. The service is exceptional and personal. It has a gym, sauna, wireless internet, satellite TV, a pet dog, a cat, two budgies, two fish and a squirrel that visits the fountain everyday in the garden to drink. A guest can stay and enjoy Villa Vodno like any other hotel but to really discover its advantages one probably needs to stay at least three or four days. So many guests return repeatedly to stay here that the lounge and dining area are places of reunion.

The family who run the hotel create the social ambience. At least twice a week there is a banquet for guests, and even friends of guests, where people get to know each other helped by some of the best food and wine in town. The restaurant is unconventional (there is no set menu) but it provides outstanding Macedonian cuisine. A guest can specify what he/she would like and it will appear in abundance that evening. Alternatively, and I would recommend this, just ask for dinner and take whatever has been bought and prepared fresh from the market each day. I have never been disappointed and I have extended my knowledge of cuisine to great benefit.

The guests are varied, lots of business people, consultants on contract, embassy staff and on my last visit a new customer, families with children. Perhaps the best compliment is that some of the business people return for holidays with their spouses because if one likes comfort, excellent service and good company this is the hotel to stay in.

Villa Vodno is a small, owner operated hotel located about 15 minutes walking distance from the center of Skopje, near the bottom of Mt. Vodno. Compared to other hotels that I have visited in this region, I found the hotel to be quite superior. Rooms are very large with either a seperate sitting room and bedroom area or certainly large enough for two seperate areas. We stayed in rooms 21 and 27 and both were very large, and could have easily accommodated more than one person. The area is very quiet, which makes for a very nice place to rest at night; compared to other hotels in the inner part of the city which are quite noisy. Staff members were very friendly and offered to assist with directions and other information when needed. The wireless internet acess was fast, easy, and free. Breakfasts were standard, but the coffee (drip!) was good. This is not a luxury hotel, but it is very nice, simple, clean and I would highly recommend it to people visiting Skopje, either for business or pleasure.
