Very nice guy running the place "James". They all work very hard! Chinese food good, sushi good ( but variety basic and limited) but some of the fish is frozen and not fully thawed when prepared/servved), two hibachi tables. Fun atmosphere.

As of December 2011 the teppanyaki tables are no longer in use. Sad to see that, but I guess there just wasn't the demand for teppanyaki in Ashland. The sushi is still great, as is the Chinese food. We have not seen the manager, Vincent, on the premises for a while.

While visiting our new grandwon we used their Chinese takeout service three times. Not only was the food delicious but they pack it in plastic making leftovers easy to save in the refrigerator. Everyone ordered something different and all was good.

We live in Ashland and couldn't wait for Ichiban to open. We were not disappointed. The Japanese an Chinese dishes are both great. The Sushi is fantastic, my wife loves the Crazy Roll, and I am a fan of Uni (sea urchin roe). For special occasions we do the Teppanyaki, which is a lot of fun, but rather expensive to do on a regular basis. The owner, James, and his manager, Vincent, are both gracious and attentive hosts. We love the food, the people the fact that it is close to home.

Ichiban is a decent Chinese-run Japanese and Chinese restaurant, located in a nondescript strip mall. It dispenses with many of the usual suburban Asian restaurant clichés, including buffets and large cocktail lounges, focusing on a higher-quality food offering.

Its Chinese food is a particularly pleasant surprise, with its consistently above-average quality, relatively light sauces and batters, and fresh tasting ingredients. There isn't the feeling of pre-cooking or distributor-prepared food here, as you tend to find in a lot of small Chinese restaurants.

The Japanese menu is decent, with both sushi choices as well as traditional cuisine including udon, sukiyaki and other popular dishes. There are also teppanyaki tables in-house.

You may not feel as though you just left Tokyo when you finish your meal, but for Ashland and the surrounding environs, Ichiban is a welcome and refreshing new entrant.
