“We Can't Wait to Return”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 October 2003

On a recent trip to Nantucket we were advised by friends to stay at the Union Street Inn. Because this was our first visit we had made arrangements with the innkeeper Ken to meet us at the ferry. This done we were surprised just how close the ferry actually was to what turned out to be much more than we had been prepared for by our friends.
Actually the location of the Inn could not have been better. We were close to everything! Living at a beach resort ourselves we were also pleased at the gracious attitude of both the staff and innkeppers. Ken and Deb were always more that willing to offer great advise on were to eat and what to do while in Nantucket. When we return the charming Union Street Inn is where we will be.

After reading the rave reviews, I thought this would be the place to
stay. Unfortunately, a strange occurance has lead me to NEVER visit
this place again.First off, there are some pros to this place: rooms
are nice and staff is cordial. For cons:Shower - water changed from hot
to cold fairly haphazardly. Considering this inn was fairly old, I
would've overlooked this mishap until...On departure day, we dropped
our bags underneath the info table (other guests bags were there), gave
the keys to Ken (the co-owner), and went into their patio for
breakfast.A few minutes later, I ran back in to ask Ken a question and
there he was with my bag OPEN and touching around. I ask him if
something was wrong with the bag and he replied that he wanted to put a
book back into the guest luggage. I was SHOCKED. Why would he be
inspecting bags?? Even if he DID want to put the book back, wouldn't
you just put it on top with a note?! WEIRD!I went back out and informed
my husband, I just caught the innkeeper sifting thru our bags.We made
sure nothing was missing and left. So if you do dare check into this
place, make sure your luggage is LOCKED!

What a charming Inn! Recently redone. The staff (including the experienced owners) treat you like family. The public rooms and garden feel like your own. It's never crowded, even when full(book this one no later than April for full season availability).
When you consider the rooms, remember that this is a historic structure that imposes significant limitations. That being said, the four rooms on the first floor are reasonably sized with tilting antique wide plank floors, windows that shut out the street noise and breeze, and adequate if small bathrooms. This might only qualify as a 2 compared to a Ritz 5, but for Nantucket this Inn is definately a 4. It's also only a block from Main street and wonderful shopping and eating.
The Inn has off street parking which is a real plus. They also offer a wonderful breakfast that changes every day and which is a delight on the bug free patio accompanied by the birds that sit on the railing waiting for scraps. We'd go back without a doubt long before we would consider the Wauwinnet or its new siblings at double or triple the price.
