Our recent repeat stay at The Wauwinet was extraordinary in every way except one, but the pluses were so great that we would award six stars if possible. The Wauwinet is subtle luxury in a spectacular, yet understated and remote, location with to-die-for views of the bay and the ocean. In addition to the onsite restaurant, there are many great restaurants in downtown Nantucket, 15 minutes away, and the inn provides regular, free jitney service to and from downtown so that drinking and driving is not an issue. (Nantucket police are unforgiving.) There is tennis, access to golf off-site, a fitness room, a supply of nice bicycles, a wonderful bay cruise, beach sitting, swimming, cooking lessons, lobstering, fishing, great staff and much more.
Now for the glitch: The inn boasts a wonderful, large lawn with comfortable chaise lounges overlooking the bay. (See the accurate website.) We frequently bought a glass of popular white wine to enjoy on the lawn late in the afternoon. One day, we walked into the small bar to buy two glasses of our favorite $11.00-per-glass white wine, but we encountered a young sommelier acting as fill-in bartender. We told him that we wanted another two glasses of the same wine as we had before. He said, “You might like to try something else.” We said, “Like what?” He said, something like, “I have a very nice white Burgundy that is only sold in half bottles, but there are two glasses in a half bottle.” We agreed to try his recommendation, and it was not until he opened and quickly poured it and presented the bill that we learned that we had to pay $175.00 plus tip for our two glasses of afternoon wine rather than two times $11.00! We were robbed in plain day light and will never again trust a sommelier…..any sommelier.
That said, we will again return to The Wauwinet because one out-of-control rotten apple doesn’t make the apple tree bad.
