Our recent repeat stay at The Wauwinet was extraordinary in every way except one, but the pluses were so great that we would award six stars if possible. The Wauwinet is subtle luxury in a spectacular, yet understated and remote, location with to-die-for views of the bay and the ocean. In addition to the onsite restaurant, there are many great restaurants in downtown Nantucket, 15 minutes away, and the inn provides regular, free jitney service to and from downtown so that drinking and driving is not an issue. (Nantucket police are unforgiving.) There is tennis, access to golf off-site, a fitness room, a supply of nice bicycles, a wonderful bay cruise, beach sitting, swimming, cooking lessons, lobstering, fishing, great staff and much more.
Now for the glitch: The inn boasts a wonderful, large lawn with comfortable chaise lounges overlooking the bay. (See the accurate website.) We frequently bought a glass of popular white wine to enjoy on the lawn late in the afternoon. One day, we walked into the small bar to buy two glasses of our favorite $11.00-per-glass white wine, but we encountered a young sommelier acting as fill-in bartender. We told him that we wanted another two glasses of the same wine as we had before. He said, “You might like to try something else.” We said, “Like what?” He said, something like, “I have a very nice white Burgundy that is only sold in half bottles, but there are two glasses in a half bottle.” We agreed to try his recommendation, and it was not until he opened and quickly poured it and presented the bill that we learned that we had to pay $175.00 plus tip for our two glasses of afternoon wine rather than two times $11.00! We were robbed in plain day light and will never again trust a sommelier…..any sommelier.
That said, we will again return to The Wauwinet because one out-of-control rotten apple doesn’t make the apple tree bad.

Dear LocalCitizen3939,

Thank you for you most recent review of The Wauwinet! ¾ off the review accurately reflects what we offer at the hotel. The other ¼ of the review is surprising. The hospitality of the property extends beyond just the last impressions. Clearly the last impression of our sommeliers actions did not leave a good impression. Our wine list is expansive with over 1,500 selections including half bottles. Our wine by the glass program also offers wide selections. I have instructed the wine team to always refer to our wine list for pricing when selecting wine. The white wine from Burgundy can range in pricing but this particular ½ bottle is unique and when referenced from the wine list Corton Charlemagne grand cru burgundy is generally never below $150.00 per ½ bottle. The conversation with our sommelier lead us to believe that you were interested in white burgundy. We made a critical mistake by assuming and not presenting the wine list for you to see the actual choices and range of price. Our apologies. Please reach out to me directly to clear this up we would like to right the wrong and our sommelier team would very much like to earn your trust again.

This is a special place and one to which we could readily imagine returning. Its location is superb and there is a nurturing feel to the place - part staff, part style if the building - that makes you feel art home. It's an Inn, not a full blown hotel - no minibars, swimming pools or gyms. No elevator. The rooms are relatively small and our bathroom needed a radical makeover (shower and bath v difficult to get into and an amazingly loud extractor fund). We had a balcony which was great. The continental breakfast is dull (limited fruit, no toast) and the full breakfast menu not so exciting. The bar needs a makeover. The library is great and has a lovely fire. Coffee and pastries are served there for early risers.

Dear Jon13UK,

I am glad you enjoyed your stay at our little inn and could imagine returning! We are truly an escape from big city hotels being located on an island 30 miles out to sea. Our restaurant TOPPER’S is one of the highest rated restaurants on the island did you know that we also have a Grand Award from the wine spectator magazine. There are only 73 winners that have this designation and we have had ours for 17 years. We host over 1,500 unique wine selections. As a house guest you must have experienced our cheese and wine during the afternoon which is complimentary at no charge like our continental breakfast. We do recieve great feedback from our guests but always put customer service first. Please keep visiting our website for our current offerings and specials. We will look forward to your return!

Greeted by a very friendly and accommodating staff. Stayed in a two bedroom/2 bath cabin which had the most comfortable bed and was very well insulated for peaceful night sleep. Walked the clean beaches and collected pretty shells. Dined at Toppers and had excellent dinner and breakfast buffet. Took complimentary shuttle into town and shopped in quaint shops. Pleasant experience!

Can't recommend this place enough. Just spent 3 days here for our honeymoon. The hotel is a fantastic old inn filled with great antiques and paintings. Staff is incredibly friendly, cheerful and helpful. Because it was our honeymoon, we kept getting congratulations from all the staff, including in the restaurant.

The rolling lawn with comfy padded loungers is a must-do, as is a town commute on the Wauwinet Lady boat.

The Toppers restaurant is one of the best meals of our entire lives. Superb.

Room Tip: Definitely splurge on a water-view room. If it's cloudy, you can lay on the bed and gaze at the...

The Wauwinet Inn on Nantucket is nestled near the “HaulOver” that separates the Atlantic Ocean and the east end of Nantucket Harbor over a narrow spit of sand on easternmost Nantucket Island. The Inn and property are a beautiful and quiet refuge that puts their guests first in a relaxed beach setting. The keynote here is the service; everyone on the staff from Eric and Katherine and their team could not have been more attentive, friendly and welcoming. The Inn is located in a magnificent setting approximately 8 miles across the island from Nantucket Village; the property has transport efficiently “dialed in” through hourly shuttle service to and from the village. Small boat launch service across the harbor is also available more infrequently.

The Inn is just that. A large sitting room with fireplace, porches and spacious green lawn with chaises all overlook the water. The landscaping is beautiful and in keeping with the gentle seaside flora of the island. The twenty or so guest rooms are situated on the ground, second, and third floors of the Inn and many overlook the harbor. Detached cottages are also available. The rooms are light with ample windows and the rooms were very well maintained. Bathrooms were small but were very clean with a combination bathtub and shower. Each room has beach style furniture as dressers and clothes cabinets. The beds are well supported, plush, and extremely comfortable. The air conditioning was fantastic during humid spells. Wifi is complementary and rock solid throughout the property.

The property affords long beach walks on the Atlantic or along the Nantucket Harbor beach. We bicycled the six miles each way to Sconset Village for lunch each day using bicycles provided by the Inn. Very comfortable porch and lawn chaises and chairs are great for reading or sunning. The spa offered a wonderful message. Early bird coffee, afternoon iced tea, and early evening port and chesse are graciously served.

The Inn features Toppers Restaurant that is an ideal setting for breakfast, lunch and dinner served in a covered patio as well as a more formal dining room. The food was fresh and meals were well prepared. Our choice was to eat many of our meals in Nantucket Village using reservations made by the Inn's concierge.

We had few concerns during our stay; over the crowded Labor Day weekend, service at the restaurant for one evening meal was confused (no table setting and a misplaced order), but that was an exception.

We shared a wonderful few days at the Wauwinet Inn, and we will be back again next year for the fabulous setting and service.

Room Tip: Rooms with a harbor view are a must.

The Wauwinet is a peaceful, quiet respite from the tourist crowded streets of Nantucket town and only 20 minutes away (transportation to and fro provided free of charge). They have plenty of hotel level amenities, yet manage to keep the atmosphere intimate and friendly, without being overbearing. Lots of beautiful beach nearby, sunsets that you shouldn't miss, excellent free breakfast and free bikes to go touring around. They take care of all of the details for you and leave you to just enjoy. Can't say enough great things about this place. The preponderance of wealth milling about the place can be a bit off-putting ( I may have been the only one without a yacht parked in the harbor on my way to the Hamptons ), but even so, I was never made to feel out of place or unwelcome.

Room Tip: There is only one room you might not want: the suite located off of the library/early breakfast are...

Relais and Chateaux run property. Quaint and very clean. Very proper. Elegant lawn chairs overlooking the head of the harbor in Nantucket. Rooms very small and very expensive. Well appointed and very friendly staff. Boat shuttle available for diners to visit from town. Fun ride in car if you have a rental. Great place to take the boat for a drink or lunch. Service a bit slow in dining room for dinner and late afternoon on lawn was also slow. During the lunch time service was better.
The beach "club" was a nice setting, just chairs and towels though. Nice swimming beach.
Spa was in an older house, decorated nicely. Nice staff there as well.
