Owner description: The Nantucket Atheneum is the public library for Nantucket, Massachusetts. The institution was formed in 1834 as a private, membership organization and became a public library in 1900. The Nantucket Atheneum offers free access to millions of books, films and music as well as over 1,000 programs for all ages year round. Our iconic building, built in 1846, is located in the heart of downtown and features art and artifacts important to the island's maritime history as the center of whaling. The library also provides a free wifi signal, computer access on the second floor and a beautiful, inviting garden.

“Beautiful, but needs to allow non-flash photos”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

We love to visit libraries on our travels and have photos of many special ones. Unfortunately, at this library, you are greeted with a sign stating that no photography is allowed. That is shame given the beauty and unique history of the building.

It is understandable that flash should be prohibited, and that maybe one needs to request permission, avoid individual patrons, etc., but prohibiting all photos? I hope this policy will be reconsidered.

“Maybe the best library in America?”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

It's big, beautiful inside and out and staffed with intelligent professional people. For a place with a permanent population of 10,000-ish it's flat out amazing!

“"Takes you back in time"”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

Get a membership and sign up online. You won't be sorry. Staff is soooo friendly and helpful. I went to movies they offered with popcorn and lemonade. Sit and read or use the computers surrounded by scrimshaw, old paintings, and sculptures of sea captains and mermaids. I could spend all day there. Take advantage of their many events and talks-it's well worth it !!!

“Atheneum and Peep Dioramas”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

Stopped at the Library on my last visit to Nantucket. They had book report dioramas using peeps! So cute and creative. They had different categories for elementary, teens, adults, and family. The dioramas incorporated the peeps as the characters of the books. "The Great Gatsby" had some peeps with jewels on them. Very cute and creative. Want to do this in my hometown.
