I truly enjoy my staying in la Catedral. Everyone is friendly and efficient. Very helpful staff. Maira is a doll. She is so nice and enjoy talking to her. Good breakfast. They clean the room daily. I love their shampoo and conditioner. This is a historical place as well. Great setting. I love to read at the bar at night. Marco Gomez is just great, helpful and speak English. Beatriz is helpful too. I hope I come back next year. It is close to plaza central and cathedral. I wish the best of everyone.

Room Tip: It would be good to provide a small space for a gym perhaps a climber and some weights. However, I highly recomend this hotel.

I had the rare opportunity to deal with two hotels for this trip: the first one, a very uppity, 5 star touting hotel, Casa Santo Domingo, was a total nightmare, from rude staff to outright unprofessionalism when they cancelled rooms that were PAID FOR IN ADVANCE because they did not receive email confirmation by ONE DAY. This was the reason we ended up in La Catedral, and looking back it was a God sent. This Boutique Hotel is close to everything, you can walk everywhere (in contrast with Casa Santo Domingo, from which you NEED a taxi to go anywhere and if you have been to Antigua you know that to embark on those bumpy roads you better leave your kidneys back in the room); not only is breakfast included, the staff (whom you all get to know the first day you are in) will cook it to your taste; the rooms are modern and the bathrooms are up to any 5 star hotel, some are small, but the charming details compensate for the size; clean beyond expectations; and ambiance beyond description, the central patio becomes so tempting, you are bound to sit around and relax instead of doing the touristing stuff. Like the pollen of the white flowers, Hotel La Catedral can cast a spell on you.

Room Tip: All eight rooms are very nice, they vary in size, but they are all very comfortable and well appointed.

Very nice boutique hotel, where service is important. After our stay, we found out that we paid for 2 nights due to a miscommunication. Everything was quickly arranged and we got a refund.
The bed was the best for the whole trip. the room was not so big, but it didn't bother us. Close to the citycenter and still quiet. To bad that we couldn't enjoy the breakfast because we needed to leave at 5am. but they prepared a nice takeaway :-)

We could not have been more pleased with our 2 night stay at Hotel la Catedral. Our welcoming margaretia was delicious and we enjoyed it while sitting in the beautiful courtyard. The tropical flowers and hummingbirds added to the ambiance of this setting. Our room was very clean and comfortable.

It was so nice to be just steps away from the central park and main part of town. We felt quite safe with the security that this hotel provided. The staff did everything possible to make our stay enjoyable.

Upon returning to the United States my husband discovered that he left his travel wallet in our room. Before we even made a call to the hotel I had received an email from them letting us know they had found the wallet and wanted make arrangements for the return of it. This speaks of the honesty of those who work there.

We would definitely return to this hotel again!

Sharon

Hotel la Catedral, with just eight rooms tightly situated around a small, lush patio, is less a hotel than a bed and breakfast.

If this is your first time in Antigua and you’re forking over $100 a night for a hotel, know that $100 in Antigua, in terms of standard issue hotel amenities, buys you less than in Guatemala City or even, often, the U.S. Most smaller Antigua hotels have no a/c; no in room refrigerators, coffee makers, or gift shop; no ice machines; and erratic Wi-Fi. If you need all this, go to Antigua for the day or stay at one of the larger hotels toward the edge of town. (See caveat below.)

There are several problems with the hotel: some rooms are miniscule; they are dark to varying degrees, and some rooms have zero hot water no matter how creatively one jiggles the shower knob.

That said, the Hotel la Catedral gets five stars.

First, the location is half a block off the park. Although this is true of most Antigua hotels – it is a small town – it is surprising how sketchy or dark some streets become after 10pm. The Camino Real in Antigua costs about the same as la Catedral, but it is inconvenient if you want to keep running between your hotel and Spanish school on errands.

Second, the small patio is wonderful. It’s almost too wonderful: you want to sit there all day with a coffee or a beer, and you risk forgetting that Antigua is worth exploring.

Third, and not to belabor what other posters have said in spades, what makes the HlC special is its staff. Marco at the front desk; Beatriz, Elena and Mayra at breakfast and in the rooms; and Óscar the bartender are fabulous. They go the extra mile in spectacular fashion. For example, my fellow teacher left his socks to dry in his room. When he returned to the room they were gone; Mayra had taken them to give them a proper dry. A few days later, having been eaten alive by mosquitos in Tikal, Mayra noticed the bites and ran off to the pharmacy to get me hydrocortisone. Finally, one night my fellow teacher and I were so tired that we couldn’t drag ourselves out to a restaurant (we’re traveling with 15yo boys….). Beatriz suggested the Thai restaurant across the street; went and got the menus, and then she brought the food, on plates, to the hotel! It is almost embarrassing to have someone wait on you like that in the era of card-coded room keys.

Finally, the HlC does not nickel and dime you. Laundry, which you hand over in the morning to have returned washed and dried at 5pm, is ridiculously cheap. We came home from Tikal with mounds of gross laundry and the bill was $8. The hotel even did the laundry for our thirteen stinky students who are not guests at the HlC. When you check in, Marco offers you a free drink on the house and snacks. The hotel places two free bottles of purified water in your room each day (most hotels charge $2-4 per bottle). Occasionally the staff leaves little chocolates on your pillow at night. Pretty sweet to come home after having foresworn dessert at Hector's to have a miniature Snicker's on one's pillow.

Folks, if you like B+Bs in the U.S., you will love the Hotel la Catedral. Tip these people well; they earn it and they deserve it.

.

Room Tip: Room #1 is very small, but has great hot water. Room #6 is dark and no hot water except at night. Room #4 has good light.
