“Sailfish and Blue Marlin!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 March 2014

My wife and I just returned from a trip to fish at Blue Bayou Guatemala. We had a blast! The villa was very nice with a pool and cabana. We fished for 3 days, and released a total of 23 sailfish and a 350lb blue marlin. They said the fishing was slow compared to normal, but we were very excited and happy to catch what we did. The captains and mates on board were great and taught me a lot about circle hooks and ballyhoo fishing. After fishing we were greeted at the villa with cold pina colodas and beers. The meals for breakfast and dinner were first class, and they even served grilled chicken sandwiches and burgers on board the boat. If you get a chance, go fish guatemala with Capt Chris. Really affordable rates and tons of billfish.

By far the best fishing trip I have been on. All aspects of this trip were better than I anticipated right from the start. Flying from NY City to Guatemala was a breeze with a 50 min.Layover in Atlanta, just enough time to stretch our legs and get a cup of mud. When we landed in Guatemala Captain Chris was waiting with a cooler loaded with ice cold Gallo beer. The 2 hour ride to the coast was a pleasure with Chris interesting facts about the country and stoping to show us a few sights?
When we arrived at his fishing house their was appetizers waiting and along with an inviting swimming pool. An hour or so later his cook served an amazing dinner of locale fare. I must say the food was fantastic the entire trip, but one meal will stand out for a long time to come. While on our way to our fishing destination on the first day we stopped to explore a log floating about 25 miles out and caught 3 Dorado, soon after one of the mates served up raw fish with raw onions soy sauce and wasabi. The best sushi I ever had.
The first day if fishing yielded 4 sails,3 dorados , second day we got 7 sails, 6 yellow fin tuna and the third day we got 10 sails, 8 yellow fins, that doesn't include the fish we lost throughout the trip.
This guy will not let you down, he fished hard and long and we were rewarded with plenty of fish and memories.
I will be going back for sure .
John (Gowdy )

From the beginning our experience with Blue Bayou was beyond expectations. Chris was very attentive and helpful when organizing our stay, responding to emails within hours, providing us with important information and ensuring we'd be set up with the appropriate gear. It was reassuring that the first leg of our trip to a new region would have all the logistics taken care of by a well organized company.
We loved the relaxed, low-key atmosphere of the accommodations which are set in a secure neighbourhood. Breakfast and dinner were cooked fresh every day by friendly staff with a mix of local dishes. The pool and bar always made us happy after a day out in the ocean, and the air-conditioned rooms ensured a good night's rest to tackle another day.
The fishing was phenomenal, and even with our larger group of 5 we all got into multiple sails each day. Unfortunately dolphinfish and marlin were uncharacteristically absent from the region when we were there, but the sailfish kept us so well entertained that we hardly noticed.
The captain and mates were clearly very well experienced, and focussed on getting us into fish, but also very friendly and accommodating despite our embarrassing lack of Spanish.
Chris was also very attentive and friendly when we were there, taking us to the local beach to humour one friend's desire to surf. Though he certainly allowed us space to enjoy our stay, he was also very enjoyable when hanging around, and we picked his brain about what to expect for the rest our trip around Guatemala. Going above and beyond, he helped us organize a trip to the mangrove estuaries of Monterrico, and then despite not staying at their accommodations in Antigua, gave us a tour of the beautiful city before setting us off 'with the training wheels off'.
The rest of our trip in Antigua, then on to Lago Atitlan, Chichicastenango, Volcan Pacaya, and finally Copan Ruinas in Honduras, was equally amazing, enriching and safe.
We became totally smitten with Guatemala and the people who were all so friendly (again, despite our poor grasp of Spanish) and reliable.
It is also obvious how much pride Chris takes in what he does, and as his guests we were rewarded with an unforgettable experience. We have our sights set on his operation on Rio Dulce to fish for Tarpon next time, certain to have another great adventure!

My fiance wanted to take me to catch sailfish for my 30th birthday. We decided on Guatemala; the bite is one of the best in the world and the country was supposed to be beautiful also (it was). We decided to book with Blue Bayou because he (Chris) was very informative and helpful during the planning stages of the trip. Captain Chris put us on the fish for the first two days, all giant Pacific Sailfish. His tackle and gear were top of the line, boat performed admirably, and his mates were friendly and knowledgable. The rest of the trip was spent split between Lake Atitlan and Antigua. Both were great areas. Antigua has a well earned reputation as a great vacation destination off the beaten track, and it lived up to the hype. Very easily walkable (and safe), though the street signs could use some work. While in Antigua, we stayed at "Casa Starrs", which was fantastic. They made us feel right at home, and bent over backwards to make us as comfortable as possible. One night we were dying for tacos but feeling lazy and tired, so we wound up eating takeout by candle light on their gorgeous rooftop patio. Lake Atitlan was fun also (and very beautiful), although we didn't do all that much. The different lodgings we stayed in were all fantastic, as was the transportation Chris arranged for us. Traveling around in a foreign country can be a bit daunting. All in all it was a great trip. I am already thinking about a "man trip" down there to catch more big sails; they don't grow them that big over here on the Atlantic.

Our experience at Casa Starrs was beyond delightful!!! This is the perfect way to do Antigua. Patricia and Chris were incredibly kind and accomodating. Their place is so beautiful and charming, and we could not have enjoyed our stay more- they are the perfect B&B hosts. The rooms are private, and in a seperate wing of the house. The rooftop terrace is breathtaking, and the views are out of this world! I would highly recommend this place to anyone. We just got back from Casa Starrs, and we are already planning our trip back for next year!

My buddy Dan and I live in Wisconsin and wanted to take a trip to sailfish country for the obvious unreal fishing. We booked a 3 day fishing trip with Chris who's from Michigan and bilingual. This was a big help since we don't know a lick of Spanish. He picked us up from the very nice airport in the city and a scenic trip (1.5hrs) later we arrived at his beach house. The house is on little channel a few minutes from the marina we'd be fishing out of. Chris was an absolute wonderful host on everything from the car ride, food and drink at the house, nighttime activities and the boat we were fishing on, and I mean everything! He pays attention to the details and is truly one of those guys that wants to make your experience a great one and not just concerned with collecting your money and shooting you out the door. Our fishing was very slow during our 3 days but that's fishing, certainly not Chris' fault. There was about a 6-7 day period when the fish didn't bite for anyone including the hotshot captains that we commonly see on TV down there. They caught 'em before we got there and after we left but we just happened to pick the wrong 3 days that's all there is to it. We did catch some dolphin that we put on the dinner table, landed one big sail and had shots at several others but boy were they tight lipped. even though the fishing wasn't spectacular for us, I wouldn't hesitate to go back next year or the year after if I can fit it in. upon leaving I lost my baseball cap somewhere, I couldn't find it. A week after we got back, Chris found it in his van and mailed it back to me. I was really impressed with that. That’s just the kind of guy he is, he'll take good care of you. Thanks much Chris, Hans Juech

Casa Starrs and Antigua are amazing. I spent a month traveling through Central America and ended my trip with a four day stay at Casa Starrs in Antigua, which was the best decision of my trip. Chris and Patti Starrs were phenomenal hosts and my stay at their B&B was excellent. They provided an amazing room with private bathroom (including access to the terrace), a great daily breakfast, and transportation (including bus station/airport pick-up & drop-off). Additionally, they helped me join a guided hike to Pacaya to visit the lava fields, tour a coffee plantation (Finca Filidelphia) - including a ridiculously awesome downhill mountain bike tour of the farm, and a day of offshore fishing in the Pacific with Blue Bayou (also operated by the Starrs - highly recommend spending a day fishing in Guate). Overall, I had an great stay at Casa Starrs and can't wait to travel back to Antigua!
