“beauty at every turn”
Reviewed 18 November 2012

Although I did not have a room with a view, all I needed to do was step outside to experience the luxurious beauty of Casa Santo Domingo. The room itself was large as was the bathroom. Service was top-notch. I enjoyed all meals at the restaurant. But mostly I enjoyed wandering the grounds of this special hotel.

Room Tip: I asked for a quiet location and got it.

From the moment I stepped into this hotel, I was taken aback by it's unparallelled beauty and ambiance. The halls are lined with lush plants and flowers.. lit by candlelight.. and haunted by the echos of the beautiful songs of monks or opera playing throughout the property. They have done such a masterful job of weaving the monastery's ruins in with the hotel. You can't help but walk slowly to take it all in. And there is so much to enjoy and explore here. It's a destination in and of itself. Take the time to walk through all the museums. And for a real treat, go and explore the ruins at night. They are dimly lit but beautiful in that light. Plus, you'll have the place all to yourself (other than the beautiful music playing). The rooms have all the amenities (except A/C but you don't really need it) and the hotel takes cleanliness very seriously. They even warn you that they inspect the rooms with ultraviolet light. The pool was beautiful, especially at night. You will not be disappointed at this hotel. One a word of caution, the beds are quite firm but not horrible. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that doesn't have a balcony that faces the outside wall. There is a lot of vehicl...

Ok, this is easily one of the most beautiful hotels I've ever seen. I've stayed in many hotels, including several high-end, luxury hotels, but it's rare to see a hotel like this, with such beautiful grounds, great history on the premises, and such interesting things to see. Note: you don't have to stay at the hotel to take a look at the gorgeous grounds and interesting things to see. It's open to the public and, if you're in Antigua, it's worth checking out.

Since everyone has done a pretty good job talking about the rooms and such, I thought I'd just point out more of the cool things on the grounds. There are actually ruins on the property -- not amazing but really cool when you think there is history right on the hotel property. There are also tons of bright, colorful flowers and green to look at. So nice on a sunny day.

Don't forget to check out some of the quirkier parts of the hotel: marionettes and amazing carved statues as decor and this amazing fabrica where the hotels candles and marionettes are actually made. The fabrica was one of my favorite places -- imagine seeing a bunch of marionette and marionette bits hanging about, as well as actually seeing first-hand how the hotels lovely colored/shaped candles are made.

I spent a couple days at Casa Santo Domingo for a conference. I loved the candles at night hidden in the walls of the Hotel. They let the wax drip down and pile up it is so cool. The gardens are really beautiful with aqueducts running through them.....truly this place takes you back hundreds of years. You can spend quite a long time just sitting in the lobby seeing all that goes into this place. You must at least take a walk through the hotel.
I felt the service after the front desk was just ok. A little impersonal after check in. I think the hotel is at a point where it is too big to achieve that feeling that you matter that smaller hotels still can provide. I thought the food also was just ok.

Room Tip: I like the rooms in the back of the hotel because they overlook what have to be some of the most bea...

As board director of an international newsmedia organization I travelled alot through out the world. Without thinking twice I would nominate the Casa de Santo Domingo the most charming hotel I´ve ever stayed at. At night the building, an old monastery, glooms with hundreds of small candles, giving the reception and hallways an incredible atmosphere. The rooms are super modern and comfortable in a smart constrast that only enhances their comfort. I recommend the hotel sure that anyone that stays there will memorize it for the rest of their lifes. Fantastic.

I think that nothing can prepare the traveller for the beauty of the Casa Santo Domingo. While there may be some other "hotels" that bring more luxury, few will take you back 200-300 years do quickly.
The rooms are comfortable, many with fireplaces; the grounds [landscaping/gardens] are well taken care of but it is the architecture and preservation of the once Covenant that will impress.
The service is unsurpassed.
The location is good, a 10-15 minute walk to the Central Park, and wireless is included.
The surprise is the restaurant; now with with very competitive prices and as before - excellent plates.
Even if one does not stay at this hotel - a visit is in order.

Room Tip: Prices are high for the rooms, but having stayed in 3 different parts of the hotel, I still prefer t...

There's no doubt that Hotel Santo Domingo is beautiful. My first response while walking into the lobby was that it was like Never Neverland. A maze of gorgeous gardens peppered amongst ruins with scarlet macaws scattered throughout. We were there as a part of a wedding and most of our photos were taken on the picturesque hotel grounds.

We only stayed at Santo Domingo for one night, as we stayed at another, less expensive hotel for three other nights. The extra cash spent on the room was worth the views, however, our less expensive hotel had many more perks over Santo Domingo. Most hotels in the area offered free WiFi, while Santo Domingo charges a pretty steep 135Q fee (about $13 US) for just one day of usage. Also, the only advertised purified water were bottles in the room for 16Q a piece. Some had said that the water at Santo Domingo was cleared to drink without issue, but I didn't want to take any chances.

All in all, it was a lovely place to stay. The staff was very helpful and on top of everything. Be sure to check out the pumpkin ravioli if you dine at the restaurant. It is unbelievable!!
