“16th century monastary with 21st century comfort”
Reviewed 28 August 2007

Casa Santa Domingo was one of the most romantic places my husband and I have ever stayed. What a unique idea - a modern luxury hotel, tastefully and creatively built around the ruins of a 16th century monastary. The museums throughout the grounds are remarkable - be sure to visit the many cripts where bones are on display. But the rest of the hotel integrates the ruins in creative ways, such as the wall bordering the pool area is a ruin from the historic monastary. My college roomate got married in the chapel, which retains the historic, ruined walls, but has replaced the ruined ceiling with a tasteful modern canopy.

Our room was very comfortable, with a remarkable view of the volcano from our 2nd flr. balcony and a fountain tinkling below. Sacred music plays softly in the public areas and candles are everywhere. On the downside, the front desk service was a bit curt, and we received a room with two double beds, despite requesting a king.

Happy travelers will remember that they are in Latin America, not the USA, and with a flexible attitude will be very happy at Casa Santa Domingo. Also, if you liked it here, be sure to visit Hotel Atitlan in Panajachel.

Perhaps if we lowered our expectations before going there our experience would have been more enjoyable. For $260 a night in the presidential suite, we believed we could get some degree of customer service. We initially booked a two night stay. After our plane was delayed in El Salvador, we missed the first night and arrived tired the next day. Without considering our other options, we booked another three nights immediately. Things went downhill quickly from there. Because we made two reservations the hotel staff made us check out of the room, bring our luggage to the check in desk and leave it there all day while they prepared another room. We returned at the designated time to claim our next room only to find out the room was not ready. The staff was unfriendly and unaccomodating. After asking for the hotel to cancel our reservation we were escorted quickly to the room only to find construction workers literally on our balcony. In fact, the whole wing was under construction. We walked the long corridors of the hotel to find someone to listen to our complaints and after three hours, we were finally given another room. On our final morning, at 8:00, hotel staff starting knocking at the door and attempted to get in using the key (thankfully, we left the key in on our side of the door preventing them from getting in). This commotion was all to deliver the bill to the room. The knocking and trying to enter occurred again at 10:00. This time, another staff person needed to check our mini bar. We ate at the restaurant twice and both times were less than enjoyable. We finally left the hotel, found a quaint place down the street, and enjoyed the remainder of our stay in Antigua.

I just came back from Antigua and stayed at the Casa Santo Domingo. This hotel is built where an old monastery used to be. They kept the original walls when possible and remodeled keeping the same style so it makes it seem that it is part of the original construction. There are several mseums inside and the food and rooms are great... Every night the hotel is lit up with candles and the gregorian chants can be heard on all the common areas which makes it a true relaxing vacation... Very romantic!!! If you go, I advise you to get a room on the second floor and overlooking the pool or any of the patios... I have been there several times and this is the area thati have enjoyed the most.. At least make sure that you get a balcony.. This is a must..

On the downside the only remarks I need to make are the quality of the towels on the room (not great for a 5* hotel) and that there is no a/c on the rooms (which i don;t particularly need) but all of the second story rooms have balconies which allow the breeze to come in

The breakfast buffet is great !

I love this hotel and love going back everytime I visit Antigua

Doing searches for the best hotels in Antigua, Guatemala, we ran across this hotel name in many sources. The required 3-night minimum almost prevented us from staying there. However, the hotel finally allowed our 2-night reservations after we contacted them numerous times; as we were at the end of our trip and only had 2 nights left. Upon arriving, we were placed in a room alongside the main entrance (an open tiled hallway). We soon discovered that we couldn't close the door from the room onto the tiny balcony (overlooking that noisy entranceway), because there was no air conditioning. Throughtout both nights we were there, the noise of people coming and going all through the night awakened us. The grounds are historical and really interesting, but the food is overpriced and not excellent, the service (at least from some of the staff) was a bit condescending; and it took 3 attempts and 3 waits going quite a long way to their events office to make reservations for the New Year's Eve dinner and party. Overall, we were disappointed; as it was a pricey hotel, and we expected a lot more from it.

This hotel is a beutiful property, but is better just to visit the museum like part of the tour around Antigua.
My husband made a reservation at this hotel for my birthday. He wanted to give a great supprise booking one of the best room in the hotel with flowers arrangements and chocolates...
When we arrived, we find out that they gave away our designated room, we waited 1 hour to get another room... Finally, the room it was not what we expected, not chocolates or flowers and we were charged for all of that. Terrible dissapointment!!
Certainly is not a 5 star Hotel!!!!!!

Although we were walk-ins - no reservations - who had arrived in Antigua for a one-night stay after a session at a humanitarian project, the staff were gracious, did not blink at the paint and concrete dust on my clothes, and found us 3 rooms. Mine was Suite 4S, situated in a condo outside the main hotel. It is a 2 story/loft apartment that was impecible, clean, with fresh drinking water , a great king-size bed and no end of hot water (essential ), the usual amenities and large bath sheets. Extremely secure. My only hesitation was that there was no quick entry to the hotel from the apartments. The suite is great for a family as it has a pull-out sofa, a full kitchen and 1 1/2 baths. Other suites have washer/dryer sets. The hotel site is beyond belief in its beauty. We visited with florists setting up for a wedding, and toured the historic site. Note the parrots, gardens, gorgeous pool, and non-aggressive sales people in the small stores. I hope to stay there again. The prices are more than reasonable! I also enjoyed the mix of relics and modern art on display and the baroque music.

The Casa Santo Domingo is absolutely lovely! We arrived at night when all the candles were lit and soothing music was playing in the corridors. We sat in the outside hot tubs and sipped glasses of wine while enjoying the candles around us. We had a large standard room with a fireplace, balcony overlooking a garden and volcano and a tv with international channels. The bathrooms were large and a jar of floating rose petals was next to the sink. The staff were friendly and helpful and the museum is very interesting. We only had one night here but plan to return!!!!
