Owner description: Destroyed twice by earthquakes, this 1548 church was rebuilt in the 1700s to withstand earthquakes and boasts a lovely yellow façade and a huge stone fountain, reputed to be the largest in Central America.

La Merced is a beuatifu and understated wonder. For those who have traveled Europe and seen the churches, please compare. You can really feel the heart of the place if you sit there a bit. A great "working" church.

This church is beautiful on the inside and out. We stopped by during Mass one evening and didn't stay too long as not to disturb. A must see!

I love the Merced. I live close to Antigua and we often stop in at the church and ruins. When I was a teen I'd go into the ruins with a coffee and a notebook and spend hours in there writing. If you travel to Antigua, you should definitely see it.

Nice church with ruins next door, which are well signed with regards to the history of the convent/church. Entrance was very cheap, and the fountain in the courtyard would be very impressive if they switched the water on.

This is a beautiful church to visit right in the heart of Antigua. For you who are looking at the Arch, it is he church at the end of the street (looking north) right behind the Arch. Go and take a look. There is also a small park/plaza in front of the church that is a great place to relax and people watch. No venders like o the Main Plaza and the locals are just doing their thing, meaning they are more relaxed and friendly.
